Social Worker - Community Programs

Summary: 

The Brooklyn Community Program meet the needs of individual clients and families impacted by violence (domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and homicide) by providing group counseling and short term individual counseling focused on assessing and addressing client risk and safety needs.  The social worker may provide crisis intervention, accompaniment, and individual and group counseling.

The Master Level Social Worker provides both direct and indirect social service related assistance to all victims of crime and abuse, specializing in work with survivors of intimate partner, family violence and sexual assault. The Community Programs provide comprehensive services, including assessment and case management, counseling, advocacy, referrals, information workshops and support groups, to individuals and families impacted by violence including domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, and homicide. Located in the communities we serve, Safe Horizon partners with local agencies to provide care to meet the myriad of needs related to victims of violence and their families who are directly or indirectly affected as well.  Safe Horizon Community Programs are located throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City.

Responsibilities: 

• Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients. Coach and guide staff in their client practice that reflects these approaches. Participate in the recruitment, hiring and on-boarding of new staff.
• Conduct client-centered intakes and in-depth safety assessments in person or over the phone.   Develop risk management plans with clients, reflecting each client’s unique situation.
• Provide short term counseling, crisis intervention and case management services to victims of crime, including victims of rape, sexual assault, and  domestic violence;
• Advocacy on behalf of victims of crime in obtaining orders of protection, Office of Victims Services Compensation, and emergency housing transfers for New York City Housing residents;
• Advocate on behalf of clients for public entitlements ( Human Resource Administration benefits) with systems and other agencies, where necessary;
• Provides information and referrals for services such as medical/hospital-related, shelters, long-term counseling, public assistance and other entitlements;
• Facilitates sexual assault and domestic violence support groups;
• Facilitates the linkage of clients to internal and external mental health providers;
• Provide accompaniment services to victims to appointments (i.e.,- court, medical appointments, and criminal justice proceedings) as needed;
• Engages in service coordination and collaborates with community providers including local hospitals, NYPD, social services;
• Facilitate sexual violence primary prevention/community mobilization activities, as directed by DOH.
• Conduct prevention education workshops to students in schools and to the community at large to increase awareness of the issues of sexual assault and harm reduction /prevention strategies;
• Conduct community education presentations to medical, criminal justice professionals and other agencies on the issues of sexual assault and intimate partner violence;
• Provide information and referrals and crisis intervention to the general public and guidance and intervention to survivors of sexual assault and their significant others;
• Maintains case records, documenting services to clients in a manner;
• Completes monthly and quarterly funder statistical reports;
• Enters client data and services into case management system (“CMS”) in a timely manner;
• Participate in outreach/tabling events hosted by community groups and schools;
• Facilitates training programs and workshops to professional groups to promote understanding of the issues of sexual assault and assist them in developing strategies towards the prevention of sexual assault.  Review and revise curriculums as needed for these outreach efforts;
• Various other duties to be determine by program supervisors.

Interacts with: Agency staff of all levels
Community Partners (social service, police, district attorney’s office, hospitals, etc.)

Qualifications: 

Required skills:

• Ability to navigate medical, legal and social service systems; 
• Ability to assess for risk of suicide and homicide and to intervene as appropriate;
• Strong interpersonal and crisis management skills are required;
• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills are required.  
• Masters Degree in Social Work – (Prefer licensure, however may become licensed within a year of hiring). 
• Certified sexual assault advocate
• At least 2 years of experience working with survivors of rape and sexual assault 
• Seminar in Field Instruction Certified (SIFI) or obtain within 1 year of  hire
