Intern, Communications, Girl Up

​​Position Overview 

Girl Up is a girl-centered leadership development initiative, focusing on equity for girls and youth in spaces where they are unheard or underrepresented. We believe when girls and youth are in positions of influence, they work to create a more just and equitable world for everyone.   

Girl Up operates a global network of regional affiliates and serves 270,000 girls in 155 countries. We deliver evidence-based leadership development training through our girl-led Clubs, programs, and events. As members of a global movement, girls are a force for social good — connected to a community of their peers who are advocating for policy change and advancing gender justice.

The communications intern will primarily support Girl Up’s communication and storytelling strategies, across all platforms and at key events. 
 
This is a paid opportunity from May 28, 2024, through September 2, 2024, and offers an hourly compensation rate of $17.50 per hour for individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated from (within 8 months of graduation) an associate degree or bachelor’s degree program; and $20 per hour for individuals currently enrolled in a graduate program.   
  
This position is remote. Access to a computer with a reliable internet connection is required.  

 Essential Functions 

  • ​​Assist in generating ideas and digital content such as social media posts, blogs, emails, newsletters and toolkits.
  • ​Assist Graphic Design Associate in creating, designing, and applying graphics across Girl Up print resources and digital platforms
  • ​Support key campaign moments such as Girl Up USA Leadership Summit.
  • ​Monitor Girl Up website and make updates or changes as needed.
  • Assist with metrics and reporting for partner deliverables.
  • ​Brainstorm and implement creative ideas for Girl Up’s social platforms ​Assist in template document and resource creation (i.e. presentation decks, one-pagers, toolkits, and annual reports)
  • ​Assist with planning, creating, and editing multimedia social media and blog assets as needed, such as animated graphics and short-form videos.
  • ​Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria 

  • ​​Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university.
  • ​Interest and/or experience in digital communications, graphic design, grassroots outreach, political campaigns, and/or canvassing is highly preferred.
  • ​Interest in women, girls’, and youth rights; global health issues; international development; and/or journalism and communications is preferred.
  • ​​​​​​​​Broad understanding of digital tools and social media, with examples of current and successful uses of blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • ​Experience in Microsoft Office suite, with particular emphasis on database management.
  • Ability to take initiative as a self-starter.
  • ​Strong creativity and organizational skills.
  • ​Ability to work well with a small, fast-paced team and manage multiple tasks.
  • ​Strong consideration given to candidates with experience with video editing, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite software.
  • ​Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • ​Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
  • ​Must be available to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • ​Must be authorized to work in the United States.
