Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist supports all aspects of GRI’s strategic communications, including audience outreach, content creation, corporate communications, publication support, audio and video production, and website content/management.

This position is responsible for supporting audience development and outreach via email and social media; creating a variety of written and graphic content in print, digital, and multimedia formats; supporting the communications deliverables for GRI-affiliated labs, research initiatives, and grant-funded projects; and providing advice regarding communications strategy.

The communications portfolio includes research communications, media and public relations, event advertising and promotion, and alumni/donor engagement. This position reports to the GRI Director of Partnerships & Communications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience indicating possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Experience: 3-5 years of professional experience, including evidence of skills in the following portfolio areas:

o Audience/Outreach: Demonstrated experience utilizing effective audience segmentation strategies and microtargeting to improve engagement metrics; ability to assist with handling of media inquiries and elite media outreach (e.g. editing/pitching op-eds);

o Corporate Communications: Experience developing or improving a corporate communications indicator tracking system, creating and implementing a strategic communications plan, and translating key messages into brand voice and visual identity;

o Content Creation: Ability to implement brand voice, and demonstrated ability to synthesize data-rich information and/or academic research into accessible content for print, web, and social media;

o Graphic Design: Experience designing visual assets for reports, social media, digital, and print publications using graphic design software (such as Canva, Adobe, GIMP, etc.);

o Project Management: Ability to oversee communications campaigns and communications projects with multiple and multimedia deliverables (e.g. commissioning bespoke audio and video projects)

o Publications Support: Experience leading editorial processes for reports, op-eds, newsletters, and other written content; impeccable attention to detail;

o Website management: Excellent web content organization skills and ability to produce visually and textually engaging website content.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field, or a bachelor’s degree with four to six years professional experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
In addition to the required qualifications listed above:

o Audio/Video Production: Experience producing podcasts and marketing video content, from concept to delivery, including ability to use software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Logic Pro, etc.;
 

o Publication Design: Experience in publication layout for reports, brochures, booklets and other written content;
 

o Web design: Basic knowledge of web design/development and data visualization for web.
