Note: Due to our audience and the specialized nature of our work, we cannot consider candidates without a completed bachelor’s degree. Please do not apply unless you have already graduated from an accredited college or university, or will graduate by June of 2024.

Employment Options to Fit Your Lifestyle

We offer flexible start dates between June and August, with coaching work available through the beginning of January. We provide three different employment options—each with an income guarantee that reflects hourly editing and coaching expectations. Click here for a breakdown of our Writing Coach employment options and earning projections.

Coaches work 5 days a week, but your daily routine, location, and how you divvy up your hours are all up to you! We have a few guidelines and caveats, mostly driven by college application deadlines, but overall, you are in charge of your schedule and are only responsible for completing essays assigned based on your employment option.

Note: This is seasonal but recurring work. Most of our students work with the same coach through the full application process, which allows our coaches to familiarize themselves with their students’ writing and learning styles and see their students grow over the course of the year. Because of the importance of this one-to-one teaching relationship, we are only able to accept applicants that can commit to working with Prompt through January 2025.

Meaningful Work

In addition to providing insightful and educational written feedback, the majority of our Writing Coaches brainstorm and strategize with students through one-on-one video calls. You will form constructive and impactful relationships with young writers at a pivotal time in their lives, refining their writing skills and helping them understand what makes them unique as individuals while envisioning their future as learners, community members, and leaders.

Note: While optional, we give strong hiring preference to candidates who opt-in to video coaching, as demand for this service is high.

Professional Development

Prompt's Writing Coaches are the best admissions essay coaches in the world. This is not only because of our deliberate, curious, and highly-selective hiring process but also because we offer comprehensive and ongoing training. You’ll learn in community as well as through one-on-one coaching and collaborative instructional webinars.

Writing Coach Pay

Writing Coach hourly pay is $25 per hour for new coaches, with tenure-based raises after the first year.

  • Essay Reviews: Written feedback is paid on a per-essay basis; each essay has an established pay based on the estimated editing time—we use data from ten years of feedback to set these estimates.
    • For example, a first draft of a Common Application Personal Statement has an estimated editing time of 48 minutes, so a first-year coach would earn $20 (0.8 hours X $25 per hour).
  • Video Calls: Brainstorming and strategy video coaching sessions pay $40 per 50-minute call, taking into account the quick preparatory and follow-up work required.
  • Monthly Stipend: Determined by your employment option, our stipend covers non-editing work such as professional development and reading/responding to Slack messages or emails.
  • Bonuses: During our peak times (e.g., October), you may be eligible for bonuses for meeting goals that go beyond your option level's hourly expectations. For coaches qualified to work in our Asia-Pacific networks, there is a 20% bonus on essay reviews.

Prompt’s Application and Paid Evaluation Process

Our initial application should take you about 30 minutes to complete.

  • In the application, applicants provide short feedback (6-8 sentences total) on a sample essay. We certainly don't expect you to nail our feedback approach! Instead, we are interested in observing your unique editing voice and content assessment insights.
  • There is an optional video component, which we strongly recommend completing as we use it to positively weigh video coach applicants. You can use any recording app that allows you to save the file and upload it to our form.

Selected applicants will be sent a training course and a test essay to assess their understanding and application of the training course.

  • Our review will look at your content assessment, instructional approach, attention to detail, and overall tone & engagement. We provide guidance on all of these factors in the training course!
  • If we don't select you to continue in the evaluation process, we’ll compensate you $40 via PayPal.

Applicants selected to continue will be sent a second training course, constructive feedback on their first test essay, and another (final) test essay.

  • For this essay, we will look at the same framework outlined above, plus your ability to apply our feedback from the first test essay.
  • If you do not pass the second test essay, we’ll compensate you $80 via PayPal.

If you are invited to join our Writing Coach team and accept our offer letter, you'll be sent our onboarding materials, including guidance to activate your Prompt account, where your first payment —$100— will be waiting for you! This payment covers the application process and your Welcome Call.

Note: We do not compensate applicants who ask to be removed from consideration for employment or fail to submit a test essay within a reasonable amount of time.
