Real Estate Appraiser I

Catawba County, a growing and innovative county, is seeking a new Real Estate Appraiser I for Tax Administration.  The Real Estate Appraiser I is responsible for determining the monetary (ad valorem) value of real property within the jurisdiction of Catawba County for tax purposes, as determined by law. This position has the responsibility of aiding a superb work culture in the Revaluation Division.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Physically list and appraise all types of real property, including residential, commercial and industrial.  This must be accomplished with a thorough understanding and application of the Machinery Act of North Carolina and the Catawba County Schedule of Values while using appraisal industry approaches and standards.
  • Defend tax assessments to taxpayers, the Catawba County Board of Equalization and Review and the State of North Carolina Property Tax Commission
  • Assist in the County revaluation process
  • Continue education to maintain State certifications and current appraisal standards
  • Perform miscellaneous duties based upon needs and priorities within the Tax Department 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and 2 years of experience appraising properties or related work involving measuring/listing of structures and data collection for appraisals; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Business, Economics, or a related field with related course work

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

  • Must be certified by the N.C. Department of Revenue as a County Real Property Appraiser within two years of hire.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Ability to make sound, independent appraisal judgments
  • Excellent communication and customer services skills in order to deal professionally and courteously with the public 
  • This is considered light work; requiring ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
