Development and Communications Intern

Title: Development and Communications Intern 

FLSA Classification: Nonexempt 

Job Location: Hybrid 

Reports to: Donor Operations Manager and Senior Visual Arts Manager 

Duration: June 3rd – July 26th  

 

Job Summary: 

The Development/Communications Intern supports interdepartmental projects and duties that intersect with public facing storytelling and fundraising donor efforts. The intern will learn how a mid-size political nonprofit builds campaigns, fosters long-term donor and community relations, and represents itself through visual and written forms.  

Essential Job Duties (other duties may be assigned) 

  • Research best practices and create appropriate print and digital/social media in the fundraising and development space, including social media content and print material such as the Planned Giving birthday card.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for incoming information requests via our FreshDesk platform.
  • Collaborate with FCNL lobbyists in order to summarize policy priorities and latest updates and report back to FCNL’s Foundation Relations director.
  • Conduct interviews with longtime donors to gather testimonials in order to produce an article and subsequent visual components.
  • Social Media Graphic Development: Expand capabilities and systems to translate web content into bite-sized graphics for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Engage in competitive analysis of similar organizations and their graphic styles and voice to determine highly effective visual styles and trends.
  • Capture photographs in and around Washington D.C. and help curate images to pick great photos for our Annual Report

 

Minimum Required Job Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience and Skills 

  • Proficiency in graphic design
  • Demonstrated experience in social media management
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Interest or passion for advocacy or social justice work

 

Preferred Job Qualifications 

  • Experience with video editing software or native video editing within social media applications
  • Understanding of Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience with photography and photo editing
  • Ability to stick to visual identity standards
  • Experience working with a database system (ex, Raiser’s Edge)
  • Comfortable cold calling and speaking on the phone with constituents

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment 

  • Frequently required to sit for long periods of time

  

Compensation & Work Expectations 

  • FCNL offers an hourly rate of $17.50 for the eight-week internship
  • This is a full-time nonexempt position, based on a 37.5-hour workweek. This person is expected to work in-person 3 days a week with the option to telework up to 2 days a week.

In addition to working closely with a professional staff member at FCNL, interns will have opportunities to participate in lobbying, organizing and policy events.

Summer Interns may be asked to attend Quaker programming, including Silent Reflection, in order to meet and connect with Quaker constituents. There is no requirement to worship at these gatherings.
