Real Estate Fellow (Summer 2024)
Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Life team to cover real estate.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.
The Role & Team:
This role allows an early-career journalist to gain experience covering a topic relevant to every reader's life in a fast-paced digital newsroom full of professional development and growth opportunities.
As a real estate reporting fellow, you will aid in our coverage of residential real estate, contributing slideshows, stories, and lists that appeal to our ambitious readers. Topics covered range from fascinating homes on the market to the real estate of the wealthy. The ideal candidate is a self-starter brimming with ideas who is willing to cold-call people for a quick comment and can produce camera-ready copy quickly.
This role reports to the deputy editor overseeing real estate coverage and sits on the real estate team. This role can be fully remote; however, fellows who are in LA, San Francisco, or New York are encouraged to come into the office twice a week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pitching compelling story angles for our target audience related to real estate
- Finding people to interview using a wide range of methods, from social media to cold-calling
- Writing and building stories on Google Docs and in BI’s CMS, which includes sourcing photos from wire services, real-estate agents, and real-people sources
- Packaging stories with catchy headlines, impressive photos, and killer SEO
- Tracking story-performance metrics using our in-house tools and data
- Contributing to team- and newsroom-wide projects, including Rising Stars of Real Estate
The ideal candidate has:
- Demonstrable knowledge of reporting, writing, and fact-checking
- Good instincts for what BI’s audience finds interesting under the real estate vertical
- Passion for collaboration and for becoming a stronger writer
- Attention to detail, especially for proofreading
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
- A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- Proofreading and copyediting skills
- A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
Salary & Benefits:
- Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
- PTO and paid holidays
- Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
