Health and Parenting Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Parenting team to cover health and parenting.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

As a parenting fellow, you will source and write stories about parenting — including parenting trends, psychology, health, and culture. You will keep an eye on what’s trending to produce timely stories, and you will also be encouraged to pitch new stories and experiences you can write about. This role reports directly to the senior health and parenting editor and sits on the health and parenting team. The role will be remote, but we strongly encourage our fellows to come into our New York, LA, or San Francisco offices twice a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research, and write compelling parenting stories for Business Insider
  • Produce newsy stories, explainers, visual features, explainers, and other story formats across in a timely manner
  • Write stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Business Insider reporting standards
  • Hone SEO best practices and become adept at Business Insider’s style of headline writing
  • Brainstorm new ideas based on what’s trending and what’s resonating with audiences

The ideal candidate has:

  • Familiarity with digital and social media and the ability to pull ideas from trending conversations
  • Comfort looking for sources for specific stories, leaving no stone unturned
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • An eagerness to learn and take assignments on a broad range of topics
  • A natural curiosity about what's happening near you and around the world

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide. Applications will close April 15th.
