Material Bank is looking for 3 Software Engineering Interns to join the team for a summer Internship. This will be a 6 week internship where you be able to get hands on experience as well as see a project go from development to launch. You will get to work along side our Principal Engineers where they will teach you the best practices and elevate your skills for both coding and UI. This will be a paid summer internship.

Project Overview

The core objective of this summer intern project is to enhance the utility and accessibility of a graph database containing approximately 20 nodes and 20 relationships (and the subsequent infinite permutations). The project is divided into three main components:

  • Development of Insightful Queries: Interns will explore the graph database to create a set of queries that can extract meaningful insights, which could include identifying key influencers within the network, understanding connection patterns, or uncovering hidden relationships.
  • User Interface (UI) Development: The aim is to build an intuitive and user-friendly interface that allows Members and Brands to interact with the database effortlessly, run queries, and visualize the results in a comprehensible manner.
  • API Expansion and Integration: This involves expanding the existing set of APIs and ensuring they are robust enough for integration with other services, allowing for the seamless exchange of data and insights extracted from the graph database.

Week-by-Week Breakdown

Week 1: Orientation and Planning

  • Objective: Get familiar with the project, tools, and technologies involved. Plan the project timeline and deliverables.
    • Activities:
    • Introduction to the graph database and its current capabilities.
    • Overview of tools and programming languages to be used.
    • Initial brainstorming sessions to identify potential insightful queries and UI/UX design preferences.
    • Setting up development environments.

Week 2-3: Development of Insightful Queries

  • Objective: Identify and develop a set of insightful queries.
    • Activities:
    • Data exploration to understand the structure and key characteristics of the graph.
    • Designing and testing queries to extract meaningful insights.
    • Documentation of the queries and insights they are expected to provide.

Week 4-5: UI Development for Customer Use

  • Objective: Develop a user-friendly interface for interacting with the graph database.
    • Activities:
    • Sketching wireframes and designing UI layouts.
    • Implementing the front-end interface that connects with the backend queries.
    • User testing and UI adjustments based on feedback.

Week 6: API Expansion and Documentation

  • Objective: Expand the API suite and ensure proper documentation for external use.
    • Activities:
    • Identifying additional functionalities required by external services.
    • Developing and integrating new APIs.
    • Creating comprehensive documentation and examples for using the APIs.

Deliverables

  • A set of insightful queries along with documentation.
  • A fully functional UI for customers to interact with the graph database.
  • An expanded set of low latency APIs with thorough documentation for external integration.

Skills and Technologies

Interns will gain exposure to a variety of skills and technologies, including but not limited to:

  • Graph databases (e.g., Neo4j, Amazon Neptune)
  • Programming languages (e.g., Python for backend, JavaScript frameworks like React or Vue.js for frontend)
  • API development (e.g., RESTful APIs, GraphQL)
  • Version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • UI/UX design principles

What is Needed:

  • Looking for 3 summer interns to join us for a 6 week project
  • We are looking 2 interns with with basic knowledge of python
    • Exposure with python or data manipulation
    • Will be able to teach them infrastructure side
    • Internal product
    • Insights with internal customers
  • 1 intern with basic UI

Evaluation and Feedback

Regular check-ins and feedback sessions will be scheduled to ensure the project is on track and interns have the opportunity to learn and adjust their approaches as needed.

This project outline provides a comprehensive framework for interns to contribute meaningfully to the development and enhancement of a graph database system, ensuring a valuable learning experience while delivering tangible outcomes.
