Life Reporting Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring a Life fellow to join our Editorial Partnerships team.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism brand in the world. At Business Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. At Business Insider, we strive to uphold three main core values: We are all one team, we are effective and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

As a Life fellow, you will create general-interest slideshows across topics including — but not limited to — food, travel, real estate, news, sports, and retail. You will keep an eye on what’s trending to produce timely stories, and you will also be encouraged to pitch new stories and experiences you can write about.

You will be part of the Editorial Partnerships team, whose goal is to pitch and write stories that resonate with audiences across our partner sites, which include MSN, Yahoo, and Apple News.

This role reports directly to the Senior Editor of Editorial Partnerships and sits on the lifestyle team. This role will be remote, but we strongly encourage our fellows to come into our New York, LA, or San Francisco offices twice a week.

Applications will close on April 15th.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research, and write compelling stories for Business Insider and our news partners, which include MSN, Yahoo, and Apple News
  • Produce general-interest slideshows, visual features, explainers, and other story formats across multiple topics in a timely manner
  • Write stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Business Insider reporting standards
  • Hone SEO best practices and become adept at Business Insider’s style of headline writing
  • Consistently brainstorm new ideas based on our editorial calendar, what’s trending, and what’s resonating with partner audiences

The ideal candidate has:

  • A background in journalism and experience working at a digital publication or within a newsroom
  • Previous experience with pitching, fact-checking, interviewing, and copy-editing
  • A genuine interest in covering a wide range of topics
  • A creative mind that is always coming up with new ideas and approaches to stories
  • A curiosity about the performance data and the ability to think critically about it
  • A self-starter attitude and strong organizational and communication skills
  • A love of Business Insider and what we do

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide.
