Big Tech Reporting Fellow (Summer 2024)

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Big Tech team.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism brand in the world. At Business Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. At Insider, we strive to uphold three main core values: We are all one team, we are effective and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellows are encouraged to come into our New York, LA, or San Francisco offices two times a week.

Applications will close on April 15th.

The Role & Team:

As a Big Tech fellow, you will predominantly focus on Nvidia, AI, and the GPUs and other hardware that power this new technology. This will entail reporting on and understanding the GPU chip shortage and how big tech companies are competing to address this issue. The hardware focus of this beat extends to data centers and reconfiguration efforts to handle higher compute loads needed for AI and the effort of smaller players repurposing chips and creating new ones for AI. This beat can also encompass the geopolitical element that will keep readers abreast of major GPU manufacturing changes and exporting countries’ roles and strategies in the AI boom. This includes chip competition between the US and China, and TSMC's efforts to make more chips in the US.

You will build relationships with employee sources from the major players in GPU manufacturing like Nvidia, competitors AMD and Intel, and the chip-focused units within companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and major Chinese chip manufacturing companies. From Jensen Huang to Lisa Su, you aim to take readers into how leaders in the chip industry will shape the AI wave.

You will collaborate with teammates on Big Tech for scoops, and BI reader favorites such as salary databases, power players, and special projects, as well as colleagues outside our team including Darius Rafieyan and Madeline Renbarger on Leena Rao’s VC and Startups team.

This job title is for an early career journalist who is grasping the Business Insider way and refining their original reporting skills. This role reports directly to the Big Tech Deputy Tech Editor Monica Melton.
