Summary Description

 

The City of Urbandale is seeking individuals for the Summer 2024 Civil Engineering Internship position. Urbandale is a progressive and growing community of over 45,000 people. It is a suburb of Des Moines, located on northwest side, and is nestled between West Des Moines, Clive and Johnston. Under the general direction of Assistant Director of Engineering, performs a variety of introductory survey, data collection, asset review, and data analysis to support the work of the Engineering and Public Works Department.


 

The summer internship opportunity is open for college students studying civil or construction engineering programs. This Internship is a temporary position runs from mid-May, 2024 through mid-August, 2024.

 

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities

 

  • Collects traffic counts and assist with traffic studies
  • Assist with field inspection of public infrastructure inspections as directed.
  • Perform data collection, GIS data entry and database management.
  • Perform GPS data collection.
  • Complete assigned projects of GIS processing and analysis in a timely manner.
  • Develop maps and drawings utilizing GIS and MicroStation
  • Assist with field collection and database processing GPS data
  • Survey with GPS and Total Station Equipment
  • Complete projects and other duties as assigned
  • Assist with customer inquires and special projects as assigned

 

Typical Qualifications

Must be able to pass a pre-employment offer: reference checks, drug screen, motor vehicle report and background check. Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

 

  • Must have high school diploma or GED and be enrolled in civil or construction engineering courses
  • Valid Drivers License


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: 
 

  • Ability to understand and work from written and/or oral instructions
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a sensitive manner
  • Advanced mathematical skills
  • Excellent telephone techniques
  • Accurate typing skills
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Proficiency with PC’s and computer software and applications, including, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Proficiency in CAD, GIS, GPS, and/or civil engineering design software is desired but not required.
  • Ability to perform essential duties at designated work site location at designated hours.


 

 

Supplemental Information

There are (3) openings available for the Summer 2024 internship program. Applicants selected will be invited to participate in the oral interview process. Interviews will be held the end of January to the first part of February.

Internship would run approximately Middle of May, 2024 to the Middle of August, 2024. Post-offer/pre-employment background / motor vehicle report check and drug test are required.
