The role: 

Do you want to learn more about highway construction and contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system? Would you like to gain experience in inspection tasks such as reading and interpreting contract language, communication and negotiation skills with contractors? We are seeking an intern to work up to six months with our Ontario construction office. This full-time internship will be working outdoors and in office with a hybrid option with a projected start date in May or June 2024. Apply today!

 

What you will learn:

 

Represent ODOT on highway construction sites.

Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications.

Enforce provisions of construction contracts when work or materials do not conform with plans and specifications.

Verify that projects have appropriate traffic control to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Ensure construction activities conform to environmental standards and permits.

Generate project documentation required by various regulators, statutes and standards.

Foster positive relationships with other ODOT employees, contractors, property owners and the public.

 

Work environment:

Work outdoors, in all weather conditions, 50% or more of the time – field work involves working around construction equipment and traffic hazards, and walking on various types of terrain, climbing ladders, traversing scaffolding, and working in elevated locations.

Work includes lifting and carrying material or equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds.

Field work will include night work.

 

Minimum qualifications:

 

We are accepting applications from college students in civil engineering, construction management or related fields of study who:

Start their freshman year at the time of hire (May or June 2024),

Are in their freshman, sophomore, junior and/or senior year at the time of hire (May or June 2024),

First year graduate students at the time of hire (May or June 2024).

 

AND

 

Special qualifications:

 

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
