2024 Summer Studio Internship

Term:                  Summer 2024, 3 months, (40 hours per week)

 

Summary

The Summer 2024 internship program at The Studio offers a unique opportunity to develop technical and administrative skills and learn about The Studio’s diverse programs.  With guidance from The Studio staff, the Studio Intern will explore and develop knowledge in key areas including the technical glassmaking facility, the summer education program, the residency program, and Make Your Own Glass. The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass Museum provides hands-on glass making experiences for Museum visitors. It serves as a platform for artists and students to learn, share and create with glass through classes, residencies, and studio rentals. 

This is a great way to gain practical experience in the operations of a busy glassmaking studio as we expand into our new facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Technical Team to maintain a safe, functional and organized facility by helping support the summer program.
  • Support artists and students at The Studio.
  • Assist Make Your Own Glass team members by helping with set up and ancillary tasks. 
  • Support Studio programs by assisting staff on projects throughout The Studio. 
  • Become familiar with the Corning Museum of Glass, The Studio, and The Rakow Library.  
  • Communicate cooperatively and professionally. 
  • Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

 

Learning/Training Opportunities

  • Learn about the workings of an active studio that supports a range of glassmaking techniques for artists, students, and the public.
  • Learn about our organizational communication and culture by attending One for All (all-staff), department, and team meetings.

Qualifications

  • Respect and exemplify the values of the Corning Museum of Glass in all interactions with colleagues, staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Ability to represent the Museum in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to all prescribed organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Ability to collaborate.
  • Knowledge of glass and glass making techniques is desirable.
  • Enrollment in Bachelor of Arts (BA) glassmaking course (or completion of course) is preferred. 
  • Proficiency with IT programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the ability to be trained in other programs as required. 
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills. 
  • Ability to work with artists, instructors, studio users, the general public and donors in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Responsive to feedback.
  • Thrives working in a busy environment and is a team player.
  • Some weekends, evenings, and holidays are required; flexibility in hours necessary.
