2024 Summer Hot Glass Programs Internship

Summary

The Corning Museum offers an opportunity to work with expert glassmaker/demonstrators and technicians in our state-of-the-art hot glass making and demonstration facilities. The Hot Glass Programs intern will play an integral role on the Hot Glass Team by providing developmental level support and assistance for our daily demonstration program. The Hot Glass intern will have opportunities to participate in all aspects of our operation including presentation, audience engagement, demonstration, featured artist support, technical support, and shop stewardship. A summer at CMoG offers an intern opportunity for exposure to a robust network of resources and expertise in the field of glass. Their engagement with Hot Glass Programs will provide them with regular occasions to develop new skills in their glass making, hone public presentation capabilities and develop technical knowledge related to shop maintenance and upkeep.

Responsibilities

Guest engagement and public presentation

  • Learn and follow CMoG standards for presentation and guest engagement.
  • Become familiar with the Museum campus, exhibits and activities. And be confident in sharing accurate information.
  • Study and Learn Hot Glass Presentation materials and FAQs to foster accurate information sharing during guest engagement.
  • Visiting with guests after demonstrations to help answer questions and share information.
  • Develop the ability to present quality narration during a glassblowing demonstration to an audience.

Program support and shop stewardship

  • Learn about basic technical aspects of all HGP shop operations.
  • Assist HGP technicians with projects and maintenance routines.
  • Learn, assist, and support ongoing shop stewardship initiatives.

Glass making and assisting.

  • Learn Hot Glass Programs systems for assisting standard blowing demos.
  • Learn cold shop equipment and stewardship and become competent with fundamental processes.
  • Assist with special projects in the hotshop and cold shop as assigned.
  • Learn to gaff /create demonstration appropriate pieces to CMoG standards.
  • Gaff /create objects for public demonstrations as appropriate.

General

Learning/Training Opportunities

  • Training, coaching, and practice time for presentation and public speaking skills
  • Training, coaching and practice time for developing necessary hotshop skills for successful participation in demonstrations and projects
  • Training, coaching and participation in technical aspects of operation and shop stewardship.
  • Learn about our organizational communication and culture by attending One for All (all-staff), department, and team meetings.
  • Improve career readiness through participation in learning opportunities provided by the Museum.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. minimum.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.
