Anchorage Museum Graphic Designer

Summary Position Statement


 

Under the general direction of the Chief Design Officer, the Graphic Designer plays a key role for the Anchorage Museum, working to achieve excellence through design throughout the Museum and out into the community, with an emphasis on graphic and visual design.


 

The Graphic Designer manages and maintains assets supporting the Museum brand and advances projects through concepting, design development, production, and installation. Work includes a range of museum graphic and visual products, including: project and program visuals; production of print and digital collateral, and contributions to environmental and exhibition graphics.


 

The Graphic Designer will support and co-generate three-dimensional and spatial design applications and produce materials such as labels, illustrations and layout for publications and PR.


 

Essential Functions

  • Work as a member of an integrated team that includes other designers, content providers, exhibition technicians and others;
  • Work to ensure design goals are met, with consideration of Museum brand, vision, values, mission, and major initiatives;
  • Research and develop a clear understanding of the project's intent (audience, governing thought, requests from upper management, etc.);
  • Time management and designing within budget and schedule parameters;
  • Initiate and actively contribute to creative ideation processes;
  • Support institutional design requirements, goals and production needs;
  • Work with Marketing and PR to ensure that design collateral aligns with Museum brand guidelines;
  • Assist with development of graphic products in exhibition design and space-planning projects;
  • Participate in and support the design process for exhibitions, helping to illuminate the exhibition goals, content, and design intent through all work products, from announcements to installations;
  • Create, support, and participate in graphic design and related programming, such as in support of Anchorage Design Week, the North x North Festival, After Dark, and similar Museum-led events and initiatives;
  • Participate in technical design and the design of multimedia projects (user interface technology design for visitor choice elements, wireframe and initial conceptualization of exhibitions website, interactives and other);
  • Create and execute graphic design products, including collateral and environmental graphics, from concept through final delivery for print, web, film and new media with creative direction led by various internal and external collaborators;
  • Serve in various graphic design roles--from ideation partner to creative director to production assistant to program support--as assigned by the Chief Design Officer/Department Director;
  • Production and implementation of a variety of materials for the facility and offsite projects, including text panels, signage, wayfinding, and creative elements;
  • Coordinate with external vendors for production of physical work products from prototypes to final deliverables and ensuring quality and consistency;
  • Ensure and facilitate an archive of design-related files, samples and collateral

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent design conceptualization, production, and execution
  • Knowledge of design in print and digital medias
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals, departments, and vendors
  • Ability to work independently and organize time efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Strong work ethic, willingness to support project team members, and proactive approach to collaboration
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects with changing priorities as required
  • High attention to detail, and ability to communicate details effectively with non-design professionals
  • Ability to prepare images and develop alternative compositions and layouts for review
  • Excellence in typographic treatments
  • Ability to thrive in highly creative, high volume, multi-tasking environment, with projects of multiple scales and multiple audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design, visual design, exhibition design or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software for project administration is required
  • Technically savvy, with detailed knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite graphic design applications, with in-depth knowledge and capabilities in Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
  • Experience working in visual communications software for multimedia presentations, including Adobe Animate, Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Trimble SketchUp, Blender, or similar.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to plan and manage projects with deadlines
  • Willingness to serve as the on-site Graphic Designer serving multiple departments and initiatives on an in-house design team working within a collaborative studio environment.
  • Ability to work well as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to receive feedback and direction
