THE JOB

Cobbossee is a 4-week, 2-session sleepaway summer camp in Maine. The dates for this position run from June 9th to August 10th, 2024. For more on what summer camping actually is, see the very bottom of this document!
 

Cobbossee is looking for a few talented, male or female Media Interns this summer. This position involves a lot of photography and a role in the Camp Cobbossee social media platform. If you do not have experience or interest in Photography, please do NOT apply for this position. We seek photographers who can capture the action of our competitive program whilst promoting our culture through pictures reflecting warmth and camaraderie between our staff and campers. You should love sports and the outdoors, this job is active and social, encompassing the entire Cobbossee program including special events, trips and competitions. That means the right intern gains valuable experience developing their own portfolio with the freedom to be involved with every facet of Camp Cobbossee!

This is a non-counselor position in our camp community. You will not be directly responsible for campers although you will still be adjacent to their summer experience. Your role will be very dynamic, involving independence and responsibility to complete time sensitive assignments as well as completing daily tasks involving social media communication and photography all over campus. Creativity is essential in this role! Your days will be varied and you will manage your own time to complete your assigned tasks. You will gain valuable training, skills and experience in all of the areas mentioned above within a small 3 person media team. 

You will live with other non-counselor staff in shared accommodation of the same gender and outside of your media duties be fully encouraged to dive into the Cobbossee program alongside our campers and staff. Applicants need to provide a portfolio as part of their application.

Our director, Josh Holland, is a former academic and can make sure your experience is converted into internship credit if that’s what you want. If you are in any media-centered major, this experience can be one of the best paid internships you can find.

For anyone not familiar with the huge world of sleepaway camps in New England, it works as follows:

All over the northeast each summer, families send their boys and girls up to New England to spend anywhere from a couple weeks to the entire summer at a sleepaway camp. Sometimes people who are not from the east coast see this as a strange choice, maybe even a mean choice! “Don’t they like their kids?” the question goes. Of course they do. They love their children and it’s hard for them to be away from them for the time they are at camp. But parents sacrifice time with their kids in the summer because summer camp is really good for young children. Camp (especially longer-term camps of four-to-eight weeks) teaches children independence, self-reliance, and confidence through the teaching of new skills, improving at sports, and living away from home. It isn’t always easy. But it is worth it! Crucial to this process are you, the counselor. You become like a family member to the campers in your cabin. In fact, you will find yourself developing really fast yourself, just so you can be the best counselor and instructor possible for your kids! It is rewarding, challenging, and transformative work to care for campers.
