Musculoskeletal Injury Research Fellow with the Military Performance Division

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs. Fellowship will be in the Military Performance Division, whose goal is to conduct research to enhance the performance of military occupational tasks and to prevent performance decrements due to physical overload and musculoskeletal injuries.  

What will I be doing?

As a research physiologist fellow with the Military Performance Division's Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program and under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to learn and assist with:

  • Performing data collection procedures to include, but not limited to, anthropometrics, physical performance measures, dual x-ray absorptiometry, high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography, and phlebotomy.
  • Gaining experience in all aspects of research studies, including laboratory and field-based studies. This may include organizing orders and transportation of equipment, scheduling personnel, facilities, and study volunteers, and ensuring compliance with Institutional Review Board requirements.  
  • Entering data and ensuring the accuracy of the database.
  • Performing literature searches.
  • Learning from and engaging with principal investigator/s with preparation of publications and presentations (e.g., create slides, design tables and figures).

Where will I be located?  

Natick, Massachusetts. This opportunity may require travel for data collection at off-site locations (up to ~25% of time).

What is the anticipated start date? 

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment anticipated to begin in early 2024; exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. 

Appointment Length

Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability. 

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • The candidate should have or be pursuing (to be completed by Summer 2024) a BS or MS in exercise, physiology, and/or similar topic areas that would facilitate the opportunities listed in the position description.
  • A successful candidate should be well-organized, able to participate autonomously, and interested in broadening their experience in research.
  • Prior research experience is highly desirable, but not required.
