Public Health Internship - Summer 2024
Position Summary: The nonprofit Jacksonville Urban League’s Center for Advocacy and Social Justice seeks a highly motivated and detail-oriented Public Health Intern to join our organization. The Public Health interns will have an opportunity to work with health professionals, public health experts and health organizations that are focused on inequality. This internship opportunity offers a unique experience to work closely with the League’s staff, community partners and leaders in analyzing and assessing various policies, legislative initiatives, grants and research reports. Social Justice Interns play a key role in contributing to our organization's mission of promoting informed policy decisions. This internship complies with Fair Labor Standards Act and National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) intern standards. It is part-time, operates year-round, but is organized by semesters. While unpaid, the position is designed to provide knowledge and skill development opportunities that significantly benefit an intern’s career development.
Key Responsibilities:
· Policy Analysis: Assist in reviewing and analyzing existing policies, legislation, and research reports. Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of these policies and identify areas for improvement or revision.
· Research: Conduct thorough research on policy-related topics, staying up-to-date with the latest developments in relevant fields. Compile and summarize research findings to inform policy discussions.
· Data Collection: Collect and organize data related to policy issues, including statistical data, surveys, and case studies. Use data analysis tools to draw meaningful insights.
· Report Preparation: Contribute to the preparation of policy review reports and recommendations. Help in drafting clear and concise policy briefs and summaries.
· Collaboration: Collaborate with the policy team and other departments to ensure a holistic approach to policy analysis. Attend team meetings, contribute ideas, and actively engage in discussions.
· Presentation: Assist in preparing and delivering presentations on policy review findings to internal stakeholders. Communicate complex policy concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
Qualifications:
· Currently enrolled in a bachelor's program in a relevant field (e.g., Public Health, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, etc.).
· Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
· Excellent research and data analysis abilities.
· Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, or similar).
· Effective written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
· Interest in public policy and a willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

· Credit-based positions: prospective interns are encouraged to contact their undergraduate school/graduate school for potential academic credit. The program has its own Field
Placement Manual comparable to that of many university-based internship programs that ensures adequate mentoring, supervision, and assessment. For for-credit placements, the model allows for source faculty oversight if required by the undergraduate or graduate school. The program is led by an experienced university professor who is available as a faculty substitute.
· If internship funding is available through your institution for unpaid and low-paid internships, we are more than happy to work with you, your school, or any outside funding sources to complete any required paperwork/application materials for funding.
· The internship is tied to the intern's formal education program and assignments accommodate student coursework or the receipt of academic credit.
· The internship duration recognizes the semester learning cycle and accommodates student assessment periods while ensuring the timing of the internship is optimized for learning.
· The goal of the program is to offer students an opportunity to learn and develop skills important for their career while complementing organization’s core services.
· To that end, the program collaborates with each student in their career planning and while there is no entitlement to a paid position at the conclusion of the internship, graduates of the program are inherently more marketable and have a better sense of direction as the move forward with their career.
· The program also:
o Assists students in gaining hands-on experience: in policy analysis and research.
o Provides opportunities to contribute to meaningful policy discussions and decisions as well as Mentorship and guidance from experienced policy professionals.

Schedule: All 15-20 hours can be completed in the student's own time except for the weekly supervisor and subject group meetings.
Location requirements: For remote students, there are no physical location requirements, however there are intern group meetings with the program supervisor and staff as well as smaller weekly group meetings based on program focus topics. Onsite students have access to cubicles at our Jacksonville, Florida location, 903 Union St. 32204. Remote employees must be based within the US.
Time requirements:
· Schedule: Part-time 15-20 hrs. per week
· Employment duration: Temporary, follows semester and summer sessions.
· Estimated start: 6/3/2024 to 6/10/2024 depending on applicants academic schedule
· Estimated end: 7/26/2024 to 8/2/2024 depending on applicants academic schedule
