TAP Teacher Candidate

SPRING TAL 590/TAL 690 course will open soon!

TAP is a program that is working to mitigate the teacher shortage by helping non-education majors at UM train to become classroom teachers. UM seniors should begin by taking the course TAL 590/TAL 690 in the Spring.

TAP begins with the UM TAL 590/TAL 690 course, followed by a summer internship opportunity, support for temporary certification, a full-time teaching position at MDCPS, and ongoing mentorship. The stipend for this six-week summer internship, in partnership with Achieve Miami and Teach for America Miami-Dade, is ~$5,000. The starting salary for the full-time position at MDCPS is ~$52,470.

Elementary Educators: For their hands-on summer internship, first-year TAP elementary teachers will join the Achieve Miami summer program. Throughout the six-week summer, elementary novice teachers will lead the morning social and emotional block, support students during their project-based learning block, and have opportunities to observe an experienced teacher. In the afternoons, novices will engage in practice-based professional development, led by TAP staff.

Secondary Educators: TAP High School will have their on-site teaching internship at the same school site as Teach for America Miami-Dade. While we will be teaching in the same building, almost all programming and professional development will be separate from the Teach for America teachers. During the internship, new teachers will teach credit-recovery classes in important subjects and have the chance to watch a more experienced teacher in action. In the afternoons, novices will engage in practice-based professional development, led by TAP staff.
