Professional Development Manager

Report to: Chief Executive Officer

Location: Phoenix, AZ (1 day of remote flexibility)

Aliento is a 501(c)3 non-profit leadership organization that is undocumented, DACA, and youth-led. We are people who are directly impacted and allies who are invested in the well-being, emotional healing, and leadership development of those impacted by the inequalities of lacking an immigration status. We have impacted the lives of over 50,000 people through our programs and led the efforts to pass Prop: 308, bringing tuition equity for Arizona students regardless of immigration status. We are a leading voice for undocumented, DACAmented, and mixed-status families locally, nationally, and globally. Through education initiatives, youth leadership development, training, art, and advocacy, we transform trauma, anxiety, and fear into hope and action.

 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Aliento is seeking a Professional Development Manager to join the team in a new role that will help the organization deliver critical content and skills to several important stakeholders. One of Aliento’s focus areas centers on working with various constituents (educators, counselors, non-profit leaders, school leaders, etc.). Those at Aliento work to ensure that these groups not only have access to essential information and are educated on matters faced by immigrants (undocumented status, DACAmented status, and mixed-status families), but that they are also trained to effectively support impacted communities. The Professional Development Manager will serve as the link between Aliento’s knowledge/resources and community members that can make a direct impact in the lives of those impacted by the inequities of lacking an immigration status. This role requires someone who is excited to coach and professionally develop others, enjoys a fast-paced work environment, and is hungry to jump in and support wherever needed. The Professional Development Manager reports to the CEO and works closely with other departments. This role is based in our regional Phoenix office with one day of flexible remote work.

This role is an exciting opportunity for a natural leader to join a growing organization that plays an important role in supporting immigrant youth and those coming from mixed-status families. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented while personable, hold strong communication and coaching skills, and embody an entrepreneurial spirit. This person will spearhead the translation of Aliento’s work and impact into deliverable content through curriculum materials and training guides. They will lead our professional development strategy and oversee its execution through collaboration with the leadership team, interns, and other colleagues. This role is ideal for someone who loves serving as a session facilitator and coach while ensuring that content delivered is both relevant to and can be put into action by the target audience. Those with work experience in educational settings, a naturally scrappy attitude, leadership spirit, and who thrive in an ever-changing environment are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience in the K-12 education system is highly preferred; ideally, credentialed
  • Ability to unpack standards and competencies and create relevant and appropriate content materials that meet learners’ needs
  • Experience in coaching and leading professional development is required; prior experience in a “train the trainer” model is highly preferred
  • Passionate about building investment and allyship with other non-profit and political organizations is desirable
  • 3-5+ years experience in relevant work: creating content and curriculum, unpacking standards, executing professional development plans, long-term planning, and leading trainings for various audiences
  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial, dynamic work environment and is self-motivated to achieve results and continuously improve
  • Team player who assumes the best in others and is self-reflective
  • People leader with the ability to inspire others by building meaningful relationships
  • Experience with long-term project management - knowledgeable in creating operational action plans, managing up and laterally towards end goal project outcomes, and being able to pivot/adjust accordingly
  • Detail-oriented in their work and tasks, possessing strong organizational skills; holds others to the same standards
  • Compelling communicator, to a variety of internal and external audiences, utilizing various formats and means of communication
  • Proficient in Google Workspace
  • Aligned and committed to the mission and core values of Aliento; passionate about supporting immigrants, education, mental health, arts, and other areas that advance the rights of undocumented youth and mixed-status families

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Curriculum Strategy and Planning- 30%

  • Inventory all the current materials for each department initiative (i.e., Cultiva, Nurture, Transform, blogs, relevant news/content) in order to develop a strategic plan with a proposed timeline that is in alignment with Aliento’s training initiatives and goals
  • Create relevant curriculum and training materials that integrate Aliento’s knowledge, content, and necessary competencies with relevant education standards
  • Research the most effective formats to train relevant audiences and create materials that align with the research and desired outcomes
  • Continuously learn and stay up to date with best practices around training and professional development execution in order to recommend and implement new initiatives in alignment with Aliento’s mission
  • Effectively implement systems to assess the effectiveness of trainings through the collection of tangible and reportable data; if needed, pivoting direction after analyzing data to meet the desired professional development outcomes
  • Strategically plan ahead in order to anticipate future professional development needs for stakeholders

 

Curriculum and Content Implementation - 60%

  • Lead training sessions for our stakeholders (i.e., educators, school leaders, counselors, non-profit leaders) in order to better support our communities of undocumented, DACAmented, and those with mixed family status
  • Develop others in a “train the trainer” model so that participants are able to take action after covering the knowledge/skills found within the curriculum as well as effectively utilize training materials
  • Check-in with those that are being trained to ensure that standards are being met and assess benchmarks
  • Collaborate with the CEO and leadership team to set challenging and realistic goals for delivering more content to external audiences
  • Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics, guidelines, and standards by which our organization’s ability to professionally develop others can be evaluated

 

Other Duties - 10%

  • Participate as an engaged team member for all required staff meetings and retreats


COMPENSATION: 

  • FTE $53,000-66,000, commensurate with experience
  • Flexible time off
  • Eligible for up to 22 days of PTO (on accrual system) + paid holidays
  • Full health insurance

  • $2000 professional development stipend per year
  • Retirement options will become available with certain eligibility of matching funds
