Bilingual (Spanish / English) In-School Program Internship
About the Opportunity
The English/Spanish Bilingual In-School Program Intern joins 826 Boston’s Bilingual In-School Programs Manager to support our In-School Program Partners, specifically with writing projects collaborating with The Margarita Muñiz Academy and/or Rafael Hernandez School.
This is an opportunity to learn about the day-to-day operations of a non-profit, gain experience on best practices to support youth, and build connections with 826 Boston members, school communities, and students. Interns will also participate in specialized training(s) each semester focused on growing specific professional skills such as public speaking or résumé writing. Applicants must be over the age of 18 but need not be currently enrolled in an academic program. This internship has a flexible commitment of 8-20 hours for a minimum of four months. The intern is expected to work in-person two days per week.
Interns who are not otherwise receiving financial compensation will receive a $500 stipend after completing their internship. This position may be eligible for a Federal Work-Study partnership at some schools. If you receive Federal Work-Study, please let us know and we will try to work with your school to see if we are an eligible community partner. All team members reporting in-person must establish that they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Mission: 826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students in grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life.
What you’ll do:
- Serve as a writing tutor to students participating in both Spanish and English in-school projects, such as narrative writing, college essays, and/or senior student portfolios.
- Offer support to student publication, as needed.
- Assist In-School Program Partners with tasks as requested, which includes, but not limited to, accurately tracking student attendance across schools, tracking volunteer hours, and / or administering surveys to students.
- Communicate weekly with your supervisor and seek counsel when help is needed to execute goals.
Skills and experiences: 826 Boston recognizes that impostor syndrome and the confidence gap might prevent some applicants from applying. Few candidates will have all of the relevant experience listed below, but 826 Boston is committed to assessing candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to be trained for this role.
- Spanish bilingual proficiency required.
- Enthusiastic belief in the mission of 826 Boston, passion for writing and interest in social-emotional learning of youth.
- Interest in teaching/tutoring writing to students grades K-12.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
- The ability to take direction, seek counsel when needed, proactively identify needs and opportunities, and propose programmatic changes.
- Experience teaching or working in urban and/or underserved communities preferred.
