Learning and Development Coordinator - Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy (AILA) provides internal leadership and development programs to CSIS staff and interns, including foreign policy seminars, current event discussions, and professional skill-building workshops. AILA is also responsible for a substantial Executive Education portfolio, developing substantive professional learning programs for participants from corporate, government, military, university, and NGOs across the globe. The learning and development coordinator (LDC) is responsible for providing rising leaders with professional learning opportunities in leadership, communication, and global issues. The LDC will work primarily on CSIS’s flagship leadership programs and its growing online course portfolio. Within this portfolio, the LDC will help manage all project components, including program development, program management and implementation, partnerships, budgets, personnel, and external relations. They may contribute to other lines of effort as needed. They should have a passion for strengthening leaders’ potential and sharp organizational skills.

The minimum annual salary for this position is $55,000.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Program Development and Management

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of current and new CSIS executive online, virtual, and in-person education programs. Ensure smooth coordination of all administrative functions, including project finances and budgets, program correspondence, MOUs, and other official agreements.
  • Monitor and evaluate programming impact.
  • Collaborate and communicate with 30+ research and administrative departments across the Center.
  • Coordinate the execution of program events and projects, including event management, speaker arrangements, and video recordings for online courses.
  • Contribute to external and internal outreach for programming by developing promotional materials and assisting with strategic communication plans.
  • Assist with website maintenance and outreach for programs.

Administration and Staffing

  • Assist with managing day-to-day office operations, including expense management and preparation for internal budget reviews.
  • Support senior program staff, including through logistics, scheduling, and program communication and collaboration with other CSIS departments and operations.
  • Strategic/Future Planning
  • Contribute to the development and management of short- and long-term strategic goals for executive education and learning, in collaboration with AILA leadership.
  • Research and stay up to date with best practices for instructional design principles, learning, and development, as well as new technology and trends. 
  • External Partnerships
  • As needed and in collaboration with the Director of Learning Experiences and the Learning and Development Fellow, communicate regularly and effectively with external partners and funders.
  • Contribute to the development of new partnerships and identification of organizations and individuals that are in need of professional learning opportunities.

Knowledge, education, and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, good judgment, and ability to anticipate needs.
  • Excellent organization, time management, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task and operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently, in a team, and closely with a range of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, particularly in the conduct of leadership programming.
  • Event management experience in any relevant capacity required; ability to work with high-level VIP speakers and guests preferred.
  • Experience in program/project management, learning and development, educational and instructional design, curriculum design, community management, and/or facilitating training programs, in any relevant capacity, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing complex budgets is a plus.
  • Understanding of U.S. foreign policy and global issues desired.
