Food Equity Specialist (AmeriCorps)

The Broome County Council of Churches operates the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW is a grass-roots food bank) which supports 100 emergency food programs in Broome County. The Greater Good Grocery is a non-profit grocer providing high-quality food at affordable prices and offers programs designed to address food access issues. Faith In Action Volunteers offers a program designed to meet the nutritional and social needs of seniors in our community. 

We are looking to transform the way we serve our community and we need people who are innovative, motivated, can run with new ideas and concepts and most of all are not afraid to fail. We have a fun work environment and value creativity. You will also learn about fundraising and agency operations in this position. A "Can Do" attitude is a must. We are a small shop and everyone wears multiple hats!

Please note, this is a Public Health AmeriCorps position, not a traditional job or internship. Members will serve in-person at the Lee Barta Community Center in Binghamton, NY. A term of service involves 900 total hours of service throughout a 10-11 month period at 20-25 hours/week. Members receive a living allowance of $11,000 (divided into biweekly payments throughout the term) and an education award of $3,447.50 (to be used on qualified education expenses).

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Educate the community on existing programs to ensure access to healthy foods.
  • Communicate - using in-person presentations, written communications, and social media platforms
  • Engage the community to support and use existing programming.
  • Identify gaps as they become apparent.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of innovative programming.
  • Assess – develop, implement and monitor evaluation methods. Report results.
  • Analyze data and other metrics.
     

Required: 

  • COVID vaccination (original shot(s) and at least one booster)
  • Valid and current driver's license
