Wildlife Refuge Intern-LOCAL ONLY (PO-00735589)

The San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex in California is seeking a motivated individual to work as a refuge intern from August 7, 2023 to November 17, 2023 (15 weeks). The refuge complex is managed with a focus on seasonal wetlands, riparian woodlands, and grasslands, along with the assemblages of plants and animals associated with these habitats. The area is a major wintering ground for birds that migrate along the Pacific Flyway, hosting over a million ducks and geese, 300,000 shorebirds, and 15,000 sandhill cranes each winter. San Luis NWR is home to a herd of tule elk that is visible from a public auto tour route. 
 
The incumbent will have the opportunity to work on a diverse assortment of duties and gain experience with the station’s biological, visitor services, administrative, and maintenance programs.
Principle duties will include:
 
  • staffing the visitor center front desk to assist visitors in-person and over the phone (including on weekends)
  • assisting with conducting field trips for school groups
  • assisting with various biological monitoring surveys (waterbird surveys, crane counts, tule elk counts)
  • maintaining a native pollinator garden
  • entering data from biological monitoring surveys into refuge computer databases
  • maintaining visitor center outdoor grounds (blowing off concrete walkways, trimming trails, removing weeds, maintaining outdoor visitor facilities)
  • assisting the administrative program with filing, copying, and office organization
This internship is a full-time position at 40 hours per week.
Benefits:
$600/week living allowance
$550/month housing allowance
