Communications Specialist II

UPMC Corporate is hiring a Communications Specialist II, Public Relations, to join our team in Harrisburg! The role will work Monday through Friday during the hours of 8 AM to 4:30 PM in a hybrid work setup.
In this role, you will be working closely with the Director of Public Relations to support and execute media relations strategies for assigned projects and clinical service lines in Central Pa. This position researches, develops, and promotes positive stories primarily for external audiences to advance UPMC’s mission. The Communications Specialist II also writes, edits and produces a variety of media relations content, including press releases, blog posts, and other social media material, following appropriate style and brand guidelines. Additionally, the Communications Specialist II assists with a wide variety of departmental support functions to ensure proper media reporting, news release distribution and other activities as required.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide media relations support as assigned for UPMC clinical service lines and facilities.
  • Field media requests and proactively identify and pitch positive stories to local, national and trade media.
  • Write and edit media materials following AP style.
  • Serve as marketing communications liaison to internal clients, providing consultation and strategic communications planning where appropriate.
  • Manage projects of increased complexity, sensitivity, or importance to the organization.
  • Assist with press release distribution, web posting, media reports and other department-wide support activities as required.
  • Take responsibility for approvals and accuracy of information communicated.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize projects appropriately.
  • Demonstrate service-oriented behavior in interactions with clients and coworkers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, health sciences, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a marketing communications position or related field.
  • Must have knowledge of traditional and digital marketing best practices, excellent communication, multitasking, organizational, research/interviewing, writing, grammar, and interpersonal skills.
