Catholic Charities Northern Nevada - Immigration Assistance Coordinator AmeriCorps VISTA

The ILS is seeking a VISTA Family Strengthening Immigration Assistance Coordinator (VISTA) to continue capacity-building outreach to strengthen, expand, and increase families’ knowledge of the ILS. Many law-abiding immigrants, who are entitled to legal status, do not pursue documentation because they are afraid of exploitation. The ILS also assists with family reunification through its family-based legal assistance, helping clients achieve their American Dream by becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. The ILS also refers to the low-low income and unsheltered immigrant population to obtain identification (where possible) and access CCNN’s wraparound homelessness prevention services. The VISTA will research and present to stakeholders updates to immigration policy and law while building partnerships to continue to stay vigilant on the awareness and dangers of unauthorized practice of immigration law; it is on the rise, and our clients are vulnerable. Additionally, the VISTA will develop training and partnerships for community members who are interested in volunteering their time to ILS, including attorneys who may be willing to collaborate by taking additional CLEs and pro bono immigration cases. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.

Member Duties : VISTA will build the capacity of the ILS’s outreach, providing long-term sustainability to ILS’s services and those of CCNN’s other departments. VISTA will develop partnerships in northern Nevada to expand outreach of the services provided by its programs. VISTA will continue to develop systems for informing the immigrant population about low-cost, or pro-bono, services. Activities include the following: Collect data on local immigration statistics and status; Use social media and web-based marketing to update the outreach plan to share information on individual rights, new laws, notario fraud, etc.; Partner with similar organizations to expand outreach on the latest immigration policies; Update and create curricula and presentations to expand local and rural partnerships to sustain the service outreach long-term; Collaborate with the state of Nevada’s Attorney General’s Office and the Secretary of State to share updated information to support immigrants living in Nevada.
