The Staff Writer composes engaging copy for the Center’s multiple audiences to support the organization’s programmatic and institutional goals. They work in a collaborative environment to produce narrative feature stories, enterprise stories that uncover the forces shaping news events, news stories, press releases, commentary pieces, policy reports, blogs, newsletters, fact sheets and other written communications, both print and electronic.
Primary Job Functions:
  • Writes original online and print content, including but not limited to narrative feature stories, enterprise stories, news stories, press releases, fact sheets, newsletters, letters, commentary pieces, blogs and policy reports;
  • Attends various meetings to maintain knowledge and awareness of latest activities and content;
  • Conducts research and fact-checking as needed;
  • Provides guidance on the Center's editorial processes and ensures accuracy, clarity, consistency, and overall quality of content while meeting deadlines;
  • Copyediting and proofreading for a variety of publications; and
  • Other duties assigned.
 Qualifications –
 Education and Related Work Experience:
  • At least three years of professional writing experience, preferably within a news organization and/or nonprofit environment; and
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of AP style;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write clearly and accurately;
  • Ability to work independently, meet multiple deadlines and function under pressure;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff members at all levels in fast-paced environment;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.
Work Designation: 
This role has the following work designation options: 
  • Distant Remote: Will work remotely and are not expected to work in the states in which the SPLC has an office or in an SPLC office. They may be required to attend occasional meetings or activities in the states in which the SPLC has an office or elsewhere.
  • Local Remote:  Will work remotely, but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework:  Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.
Compensation:
This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $60,517 annually. Salary will be commensurate with experience.   
OTHER SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
