Organization Summary
Established in 1991, the Special Operations Forces Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (SOF AT&L) Center is responsible for all U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) research, development, acquisition, procurement, and logistics. SOF AT&L works closely with government, academia, and industry in meeting its mission to provide rapid and focused acquisition, technology, and logistics support to Warfighters, delivering the most effective capabilities to our Special Operations Forces. The Science and Technology Directorate (located within SOF AT&L) discovers, enables, and transitions technologies to provide an asymmetric advantage for Special Operations Forces.
 
Job Description
SOF AT&L is looking to fill select positions for interns that will directly support DoD Organization accelerating the development, procurement, and integration of commercially derived technologies to address current and future challenges.

Time commitment
- Hours of operation are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday thru Friday
- Position requires 15-29 hours per week during the Summer semester, and 15-20 hours per week during Fall and Spring semesters.
 
Roles & Responsibilities
Several internship positions are available for Summer 2023 including Business, Marketing, and Engineering roles with some focus on the following disciplinary areas:


Marketing/Business Intern – Pay Rate: $16/hour
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams as needed for research, updates, and progress tracking
- Establish automation tasks for demand forecasting, capacity planning using Microsoft tools to enable engineering and operation teams
- Customer engagement with local vendors and small businesses
- Support vendors through work with Sales, Finance, and a Creative team
- Preparing reports/presentations and present them to Manager
- Focus on documenting / developing the business processes and tool flows used by marketing and sales for marketing planning & customer engagement
- Additional tasks include development of report templates, and updating databases to provide reports required

Desired Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Power BI
- Intermediate level proficiency in photoshop or other editing tools
- Project Management Skills
- This role would be applicable to Business, Engineering, Analytical and Marketing Management students

Mechanical Engineering Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
- Assist in mechanical design of various projects, working closely with a team on multidisciplinary engineering problems
- Solid understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and academic analysis methods for structures, assemblies, mechanisms, and joints
- Solid understanding of physics and proper design techniques for strength and stiffness
- Some academic experience in component design of at least one of the following: electric motors, electromechanical actuators, or propulsion system drive components (e.g. vehicle drive systems, gearboxes and shaft assemblies)
- Basic knowledge of materials selection, processing, and manufacturing different applications
- Experienced in 3D CAD part and assembly design using 3DExperience (preferred), CATIA V5/V6, SolidWorks or equivalent
- Familiar with generating detailed drawings using GD&T to ASME Y14.5-2009 standards
- Very good problem solving and critical thinking skills

Desired Skills:
- Experience in designing, building, and/or testing mechanical hardware and/or with demonstrated projects of design for weight critical applications (may include relevant design and manufacturing experience in student project teams)
- Experience with finite element analytical tools such as HyperMesh, OptiStruct, Nastran, ANSYS or similar
- Experience in design of complex mechanisms and kinematics
- Experience with composite structures and applications
- Experience supporting lab, ground and/or flight testing of complex systems

Physics/Aerospace Engineering Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
- Work with team to design, prototype, and test aerospace equipment
- Assist with conducting research on related technology focused topics
- Consult and engage with subject matter experts
Perform qualities analysis and ensure that control laws satisfy flying qualities requirements for required flight conditions, aircraft loadings and environmental conditions
Support flight manual development by defining operating limits, normal and emergency procedures, and system descriptions.

Desired Skills:
Experience and/or knowledge of aeronautical engineering, model-based design software, Simulink MATLAB
- Experience supporting lab, ground and/or flight testing of complex systems
- Working with an interdisciplinary team

Network Engineering/Systems Engineering/Computer Networking/ RF Engineering/ Structural Engineering Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
- Support relationship building and project coordination between USF Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR – Center for Urban Transportation Research | University of South Florida (usf.edu)), USF-IAE (Institute of Applied Engineering (usf.edu)), The Hillsborough Expressway Authority CV Pilot project (THEA Connected Vehicle Pilot (theacvpilot.com)).
- Research technologies, capabilities, and other projects/efforts/developments that explore themes of connected cities and smart cities.
- Flexibility to attend various meetings across the Tampa Bay area with related organizations
- Excellent note taking skills and provide notes and meeting minutes to PM
- Consult and engage with subject matter experts and integrate work within an existing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project
- Ideal candidate is someone energetic, eager, and identifies as a networker

Desired Skills:
Experience and/or knowledge model-based design software, Simulink MATLAB 
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications
- Working with an interdisciplinary team

Information Technology/Systems Administration Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
- Work with a team to design, prototype, and test various software and hardware systems
- Assist with conducting research on related technology focused topics
- Consult and engage with subject matter experts
- Experience in Web Development
- Certificates in information systems or IT, preferred certifications include CISSP, ISACA: CISM, ECCouncil: CEH, ISACA: CRISC and ISC2: CCSP
- Assist with User & Systems infrastructure administration configuration & customization

Desired Skills:
Experience and/or knowledge model-based design software, Simulink MATLAB
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications
- Working with an interdisciplinary team

Computer Science Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
- Work with team to design, prototype, and test various software and hardware systems
- Assist with conducting research on related technology focused topics
- Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, or AWS cloud
- Consult and engage with subject matter experts

Desired Skills:
Experience and/or knowledge in MATLAB, Python, C++, and other software application tools
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications
- Working with an interdisciplinary team


Electrical Engineering Intern – Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
-  Work with team to design, prototype, and test electrical circuits, conduct research related to technology topics, and consult with subject matter experts
-  Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team on assigned technology related topics
-  Enjoy being hands on with technology to build, reconstruct, or troubleshoot for problems

Desired Skills:
Experience and/or knowledge model-based design software, Simulink MATLAB. 
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications
- Working with an interdisciplinary team
- Experience in AutoCAD, modeling software, PRISM, and other applications
- Experience in etching, 3D printing and/or soldering

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
- Performs entry-level research, administrative support or technical assignments associated conducting research on technology related topics, contracts or grant funded sponsored projects.
- Must be able to work independently or as a member of an interdisciplinary team on assigned technology related topics
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
- Requires High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience
- Higher education may substitute for the experience
- MUST BE ELIGIBLE FOR A U.S. SECURITY CLEARANCE.
- Junior or Senior level, with a current GPA of 3.0 or above

- Strong background in skillset needed for the Engineering or Business industries (certificates, soft and technical skills) preferred

Pay Rate
- STEM Positions: $17.50/hour
- Non-STEM Positions: $16/hour
