Writing Intern (Remote)

About the Role: 
A Writing Intern will help Thaddeus in various aspects of content and grant writing, including but not limited to assisting with the organization's monthly newsletter, as well as researching/identifying prospective grantors, writing grant proposals and submitting grant application material to its completion. The intern will also assist in finding, applying and receiving funding for programs, and services for the purpose of helping increase communication and engagement efforts to reach our community and establish public relations. Writers may also collaborate with all organization staff members when needed for writing-related tasks such as proofreading or creating first drafts. 
 
The Writing Intern will receive direct supervision from the Development manager under the Development Department and will get the chance to work in a self-organized team setting under the Community Engagement Committee 
 
This internship is unpaid, but eligible for academic or course credit if approved by your educational institution.
 
 Responsibilities:  
  • Assist in completing government grants/contracts, including but not limited to public, private, and federal grants/contracts 
  • Assist in the research and identification of potential grant/contract funders 
  • Retrieve and assemble background information for grant/contract proposals  
  • Assist with writing and editing grant proposals and requests  
  • Assist in grant application/contract submission processes by tracking deliverables and adhering to deadlines  
  • Comply with all grant/contract reporting as required by foundation and corporate donors 
  • Participate in writing promotional material for community outreach and networking events (i.e., monthly newsletter, website content, social media posts, etc.)  
  • Assist in drafting and updating organization’s written material to align with Thaddeus mission, vision and values as a non-profit organization 
  • Support other departments and perform administrative tasks as assigned 
  • Participate in our Buddy system once assimilated and act as a mentor/point of contact for new interns transitioning into your team during their induction and onboarding process 
 
Qualifications: 
Required: 
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in English, Writing, Communications, Journalism, or have an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 
  • Experience as a grant writer 
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with Thaddeus' staff and external contacts  
  • Excellent writing, research and proofreading skills with a strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to write clear, structured, and persuasive proposals 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Motivated and adaptive individual with excellent ability to work well under deadlines 
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to work under minimal supervision 
  • Possess strong personal integrity, ethical principles, and commitment to Thaddeus mission, vision and values 
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed 
  • Assist in content writing for organization-wide marketing strategy for recruitment and community engagement purposes  
  • Participate in our Buddy system once assimilated and act as a mentor/point of contact for new interns transitioning into your team during their induction and onboarding process 
Preferred:  
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)  
  • Experience working, volunteering, and/or writing for a non-profit organization  
  • Published written work a plus 
  • Experience with writing grant proposals within Los Angeles County (a huge plus) 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Teams and OneNote, 8x8 Work, and Adobe Creative Suite (especially Adobe Acrobat DC) 

 Learning Objectives: 
  • Intern will have a general understanding of how to research and find grant funders 
  • Intern will have basic understanding of writing and editing contracts, company newsletters, and blogs 
  • Intern will gain general networking experience though community outreaching and other company related events 
  • Intern will gain basic knowledge about the nonprofit sector 
  • Intern will be able to understand the general process of grant proposals 

Time Commitment and Working Conditions: 
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week  
  • Must be available for the following VIRTUAL weekly meetings: 
  • Weekly All Staff Meeting: Mondays 10 AM – 11 AM PST  
  • Weekly Department Meeting: Mondays 9 AM - 10 AM  PST  
  • Must be able to commit to this 1-year internship (accommodations can be made for school schedules, as well as exams)
