Job Summary
Within the Economic Development Department, Emerging Growth & Innovation Unit, functions and promotes the County as a business location by providing resources and technical assistance to businesses contemplating investment and growth in the County by linking them to appropriate local, regional, state, and federal resources and programs. Educates industry leaders about emerging market trends, technology, and advancements. Creates connections, programs, events, and inform policies that increase business growth and hiring within Oakland County. Works to position Oakland County as a premiere business location by driving progress on economic impact strategies advanced by the Economic Development Department, particularly those involving the development of traded clusters. Assists in developing programs, initiatives and supportive ecosystems that enhance economic activity in Oakland County’s key traded clusters, including manufacturing, aerospace and defense, mobility and technology as assigned.
 
Provides connections to appropriate local, regional, state, and federal resources and programs for Oakland County businesses, the public and other stakeholders. Assists in developing and delivering resources, technical assistance programs and events for existing businesses as well as those businesses contemplating investment and growth in Oakland County. Collaborates on multiple activities and events designed to activate and leverage Oakland County’s assets annually. Activities and events will be informed by and carried out in partnership with leadership, fellow staff, and strategic partners. Collaborates with internal teams, strategic partners, universities, test sites and other stakeholders to manage public-private partnerships aimed at accelerating the development of Oakland County’s traded clusters. Engages with unit contractors and grant recipients regarding program operations, reporting and deliverables. Assists in the development of select project proposals and grant applications. Collaborates with the Economic Development, External Affairs and Business Information marketing team to create communications that promote Oakland County’s traded clusters and assets for enhanced economic impact. Coordinates with other entities and cluster initiatives that are synergistic with the mission of Oakland County’s Economic Development Department. Attends and represents Oakland County Economic Development at relevant events, meetings, and conferences. Attends recurring meetings with unit personnel and with department staff. Performs follow up via phone, written communication, and personal visits with businesses and strategic partners on a regular basis, to provide continual and high-quality assistance. Collaborates with other Oakland County personnel on projects and initiatives related to areas of focus. Occasionally travels to attend meetings, conferences, and training; may travel internationally.

Minimum Qualifications

At time of application, applicants must: 
1. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Public Administration, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Marketing, Political Science or a related field.
2. Have at least four (4) years of full-time professional work experience in the public or private sector in economic development, community development, or a closely related area.
NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://naces.org/members.html). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.
NOTE: A Master’s Degree in one of the fields listed in 1 above may substitute for one (1) year of experience listed in 2 above.
3. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.
4. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
5. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
