Employment Status: Independent Contractor, Exempt
Start Date: Training starts 2023 - February 25th, March 4th, May 30th – June 2nd. Program begins – June 5, 2023 (other paid training opportunities are available during the first three weeks of May 2023)
End Date: July 21, 2023

Reports to: Workforce Development and Engagement Supervisor
Schedule: Monday - Friday
Hourly Rate: $15 (approx. 30 hours per week during program dates)

Trees Atlanta is a nationally recognized non-profit citizens' group that protects and improves Atlanta’s urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. Founded in 1985, Trees Atlanta works tirelessly to address Atlanta’s tree loss, protect its forests, and create new greenspace. Empowered by its wonderful community of volunteers, Trees Atlanta serves the metro Atlanta area, and has grown to become one of Atlanta’s most widely known and supported non-profit organizations.
 
 
Job Description

The Youth Tree Team is a seven-week summer work program that introduces Youth to Trees Atlanta’s mission and a variety of “Green Collar” professions. The Youth Tree Team Senior Leads serve an integral part of the facilitation of the program for both supervision and mentorship. The Youth Tree Team Senior Lead will:
  • Lead and supervise the Youth Tree Team Members and Leads In Training (a group of 50-65 high school students with diverse backgrounds and cultures) on weekly maintenance projects.
  • Be involved in all aspects of the maintenance (watering, weeding and mulching) on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum.
  • Be assigned to 1-2 Leads In Training for direct mentorship.
  • Assist with various maintenance projects: watering, mulching, and weeding.
  • Assist with the coordination of logistics for Youth Tree Team lunches, field trips, and lunch and learns.
  • Acting responsibly as an ambassador for Trees Atlanta while out on worksites.
  • Conduct weekly student evaluations.
  • Monitor smaller groups during enrichment day field trips.
 
Requirements 

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have a valid driver’s license with at least a 3-year clear driving history
  • Preferably pursuing a degree in related to Environmental Studies, Secondary Education, Higher Education, Outdoor Education, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Horticulture, or related field
  • Be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions. The majority of Youth Tree Team work is performed outdoors
  • Be comfortable driving a 12-15 passenger van and occasionally long-distance traveling
  • Work in a physically demanding environment with much bending, lifting, and shoveling
  • Repeatedly lift approximately 30lbs
  • Have an updated tetanus shot
