GIS Technician

Definition of Class

  • This is a highly specialized position assisting with the maintenance and continued development of the Erie County Public Safety GIS, NG911, NextGen Core Services, and CAD resources. The GIS Technician works closely with the staff at the Department of Public Safety, Public Safety Agencies, Erie County Dispatch Centers and other entities, as well as collaborates with other counties on shared regional systems. The GIS Technician is subject to being on call twenty-four hours a day and in case of emergencies. The Public Safety GIS Technician reports to the IT Manager of Erie County Department Public Safety.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The GIS Technician will be part of a team to provide professional GIS & CAD services to Erie County Department of Public Safety. Typical responsibilities include: creating new layers, maintaining and updating layers as required; digitizing data from various sources; collecting data from the field using GPS; performing geospatial analysis for maps and/or reports; acquiring data from various sources; creating, maintaining, and documenting (metadata); provide cartographic map product services to Public Safety Agencies, Dispatch Centers, municipalities and other related agencies upon request; with supervisory approval, local, regional, and state conferences/meetings to maintain a state-of-the-art approach to Public Safety GIS & CAD; actively participates in departmental staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to learn ESRI ArcGIS 10.5.1 and ArcGIS, knowledge beneficial
  • Ability to learn Tyler New World CAD, knowledge beneficial
  • Must be able to work with the relevant computer software and hardware in the Public Safety Industry
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies on a 24/7/365 basis

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or Technical Degree, or 2 years of Experience in a Progressive IT Environment
