Policy Analyst, Eradicating Poverty
This position will work from the following location: Washington, D.C.
Summary:
Southern states fall within the top twenty nationally in rates of poverty. The Policy Analyst, Eradicating Poverty is dedicated to developing compelling assets that support and build the case for expanding access to opportunity and eliminating racial economic inequality in the Deep South and beyond. Reporting to the Director of Research and working closely with the SPLC’s federal and state policy teams and other internal stakeholders, the Policy Analst, Eradicating Poverty is responsible for conducting fact and policy research; reviewing and analyzing data; and cultivating partnerships and collaborations with think tanks, academic institutions, and community partners to develop and advance policies to expand access to opportunity and eliminate racial economic inequality.
Primary Job Functions:
- Formulate the research strategy for SPLC’s economic policy analysis in our states and at the federal level, ensuring high-quality data analyses, development of evidence-based policy options, and effective public and policy-maker education efforts aimed at changing state and federal law, policy and practice;
- Produce high-impact publications (reports, white papers, etc.) related to trends in economic policy and evaluations of policy reforms;
- Collaborate with federal/state policy teams, the economic justice litigation team, Learning for Justice, the Intelligence Project and other internal stakeholders to identify needs, develop strategies and implement work plans;
- In collaboration with the Director of Research and federal/state policy teams, cultivate productive relationships and communication with a wide range of constituencies interested in economic policy, including policymakers, government officials, researchers and advocates;
- Support legislative advocacy by tracking and analyzing the impact of policy proposals and interpreting research and data for policymakers in coordination with other policy staff;
- Provide real-time support to SPLC’s policy team to deliver quick, accurate answers to emerging economic policy research questions;
- Collaborate with federal/state policy teams, the Communications Department, SPLC programs, and internal stakeholders to develop communication strategies around campaigns and serve as spokesperson upon request;
- Represent SPLC in various fora, including before community groups, policymakers, and agencies upon request; and
- Other duties assigned.
Qualifications –
- At least 5 years of experience in public policy, with demonstrated knowledge in economic policy;
- Strong research and analytical skills applied to public policy issues, including an ability to synthesize and summarize substantial amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue;
- Experience developing and moving complex projects forward with a high degree of independence within a creative, fast-paced, action-oriented and collegial environment. Able to establish a systematic course of action to ensure project completion; and
- High School Diploma or GED

- Ability to understand how sound and well-developed research can support and advance policy and advocacy campaigns;

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – including maturity and keen judgment – and the ability to facilitate challenging conversations, quickly read interpersonal dynamics, communicate in real-time concerning ongoing assignments, and to work with people from a wide array of backgrounds and perspectives and across projects;
- Ability to manage-up and maintain ownership over assignments;
- Ability to deliver content-specific presentations to key stakeholders;
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders to build consensus and sustain momentum around reforms;
- Creativity and demonstrated willingness to take calculated risks in crafting and executing strategies;
- Excellent and consistent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines;
- Aptitude for and willingness to be a team player;

Compensation:
This is an exempt role, and the minimum starting salary is $92,033.00 annually. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Work Designation:
This role has the following work designation options:
- Local Remote: Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
Other Special Considerations:
This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
This is a Bargaining Unit eligible position and shall be represented by the Washington Baltimore News Guild.
