Phi Beta Kappa Spring Internships - Events & Advocacy / Communications & Programs

We are excited to share this opportunity for seasonal employment with The Phi Beta Kappa Society’s national office in Washington, DC (although these positions will work remotely). We are looking for two part-time interns to work on a variety of projects.
 

About the Phi Beta Kappa Internship Program

An internship at the Phi Beta Kappa Society provides firsthand experience with the work of a national non-profit society and the opportunity to promote a compelling mission, both through individual projects and in collaboration with multiple departments. In addition to day-to-day assignments, the intern completes a capstone project with guidance from national office staff. The project includes a written report and presentation to senior staff and is designed to encourage critical thinking, long term strategy, best writing and presentation practices, and creativity.
 
There is a strong focus on professional development, including regular check ins on projects, resume and cover letter review, and a Society-wide commitment to providing an educational experience.

Communications & Programs Intern 

This intern will work primarily with our Communications Manager and Member Engagement Manager and other program staff to conduct research and develop materials to join the national conversation on advancing the liberal arts and sciences and supporting the Society’s 293 chapters and 50 associations. The intern will have an opportunity to participate remotely in the day-to-day responsibilities of running a non-profit with a nationwide reach. Duties will include:
  • Assisting in the development of communications and social media posts;
  • Supporting Chapter and Associations team with coordinating and marketing virtual events;
  • Updating the communications calendar with engagement opportunities;
  • Creating engaging graphic images to be used across social media channels;
  • Researching social media trends to be utilized by Phi Beta Kappa; 
  • Developing copy for Phi Beta Kappa national website;
  • Drafting general correspondence and proofreading documents as needed;
  • Collaborating with the communications and web teams on new content and concepts;
  • Researching higher education news stories;
  • Assist with other Society programs on an as needed basis, including the Visiting Scholar program and Key Conversations with Phi Beta Kappa podcast
  • Completing a capstone project; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

We are looking for college students or recent graduates with a passion for the liberal arts and sciences and strong writing abilities. Canva or other design editing tool experience desired, but not required. Preference will be given to Phi Beta Kappa members. The position will work remotely, and requires access to a computer, reliable internet, and a phone.

Hours and Compensation

The positions will be paid a stipend of $4,200 total for 13 weeks of work. Internship hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. for a minimum of three days a week. The preferred start date is Monday, January 30, 2023.

Events & Advocacy Intern 

This intern will work primarily with our National Arts & Sciences Initiative team to plan events, conduct research, and develop materials to grow support for the liberal arts and sciences. The intern will also have opportunities to participate in Capitol Hill advocacy for the Arts & Humanities, assist with selection of Key into Public Service Scholars and multi-day conference planning, as well as the day-to-day responsibilities of a major advocacy campaign. Duties will include:
  • Supporting event planning, which may include: assisting with logistical tasks related to the management of Key into Public Service, researching potential speakers, helping design promotional materials, providing support to participants, and more; 
  • Researching and compiling higher education news stories to feature in the monthly advocacy e-alerts and weekly Toolkit Tuesday posts;
  • Drafting general correspondence, developing copy, and proofreading documents as needed; 
  • Completing a capstone project; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

We are looking for a college student or recent graduate with a passion for the unique benefits of liberal arts and sciences and higher education advocacy issues. Exceptional time-management and organizational skills to manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously along with strong writing and interpersonal communication skills are required. Familiarity with event planning/scheduling and Canva are pluses. The position will be hybrid, working both remotely and if/when conditions allow, in person at our DC headquarters. The position requires access to a computer, reliable internet, and a phone. Applicants are welcome to apply for both the advocacy internship and our communications internship.
