Senior Technical Writer - Hawaii Onsite Contract July 2023

The CDC Foundation is working with CDC and state and local authorities to provide surge staff to support surveillance, prevention and response activities within the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program. Under this cooperative agreement, CDC Foundation will hire and place technical writers in OD2A jurisdictions who demonstrate a need for technical writing support to implement OD2A objectives. The primary focus of this position will be to work with the state’s vital statistics department to create content for training materials, job aids, presentations, knowledge articles, and on-line postings in support of electronic death reporting systems (EDRS).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, technical writing, English, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution, and two years of experience in communications or technical writing work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience with technical writing and editing, exhibiting and accurate and solid understanding of proper writing style, English grammar, punctuation, and spelling with attention to detail and the ability to clearly convey procedures, policy, process, user-focused instruction, and knowledge.
  • Adept at quickly understanding complex information, processes and systems, to synthesize and translate into easy-to-understand, effective language for a variety of audiences
  • Ability to determine appropriate written content and tone for identified audience
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities with tight timelines and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Zoom

Responsibilities:

  • Create content for training materials, job aids, standard operating procedures, talking points, presentations, knowledge articles and on-line postings 
  • Review drafts and provide editing of materials for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Develops and manages technical content for a wide range of communication tools, including websites, automated communication software, learning management system, and knowledge library
  • Works both independently and with a team in recognizing needs and making recommendations for messaging and technical assistance materials

Special Notes:

  • This role is involved in a dynamic public health program. As such, roles and responsibilities are subject to change as situations evolve. Roles and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon or updated to match priorities and needs, once written approval is received by both the CDC Foundation and Hawaii State Health Department in order to best support the Hawaii State Health Department in their public health programming.
The CDC Foundation requires all employees to be fully vaccinated* for COVID-19 as a condition of employment effective November 22, 2021. All offers of employment after that date are contingent upon proof of full-vaccination status as a part of the pre-employment process.

*Fully vaccinated is defined as follows: At least two weeks have passed since receipt of the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, or the second dose of the either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech two-dose vaccines.

This position requires the regular operation of a motor vehicle during the course and scope of employment as an essential function of the job.
