Comms PR Intern (Spring 2023)

We are looking for a creative self-starter who is excited to learn about media monitoring, pitching reporters, and crafting messages. This position will require an individual interested in learning about earned media in an increasingly digital age — thinking outside of the box when it comes to getting our clients in front of their target audiences. We'll pitch stories to cable news, widely-read newspapers & magazines, and long-standing radio shows — but we'll also seek new opportunities with emerging and alternative platforms like TikTok, podcasts, Youtube, Snapchat, NowThis, and more.
Fireside Internships are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about a specific skill set and our field — they are not restricted to traditional, 4-year students.
This internship is for Spring 2023, January 10-April 28 (start and end dates are negotiable based on needs). Interns should expect to work 15-40 hours per week.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Draft press materials including social media content, press releases, pitches, and more
  • Monitor the news cycle through traditional and new media methods
  • Build and maintain well-organized press lists, gaining awareness into which reporters are on which beats
  • Conduct issue-based research
  • Draft background briefers to prep clients for media appearances
  • Compile and record clips of clients' media coverage
  • Assist in running and drafting content for Fireside's social accounts
  • Send morning press clips around to the Comms/PR team to alert the team of top news stories
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Committed to Democratic or progressive values, causes, and politics
  • A passion for communications and persuasive storytelling
  • Understanding of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram

  • Excellent proofreading skills
Additional skills that would be useful, but not required:
  • Experience with moderating online communities through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter
  • Familiarity with social listening sites such as Tweetdeck or Hootsuite
  • Familiarity with media contact databases, such as Cision, Meltwater, or Muck Rack
