The Broward County Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates for the following exciting opportunity:  

STAFF ENGINEER - HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING 


Highway Construction and Engineering Division

The Broward County Highway Construction Engineering Division's mission is to provide the citizens of Broward County with the following services and products:

  • Project management for major roadway projects under the County's capital improvement program.
  • Engineering plan review, permitting and roadway inspection services for improvements to Traffic way roads and functionally classified County roads.
  • Surveying, design, and project management services for intersection improvement and congestion management projects.
  • Surveying, design, and project management support services for other County agencies.
  • Review and coordination of right-of-way deeds and easements for capital improvement program projects and developer requirements.
  • Review of subdivision plats and administration of conditions of County approval.
  • Public Records maintenance of right-of-way records, aerial photography and other historical property and development related records, and providing access to these records for the public.


Job Summary
The Staff Engineer for the Highway Construction and Engineering Division (HCED) - Paving & Drainage Section is responsible for supporting the Engineering Unit Supervisor performing a wide range of engineering and management activities, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Reviews permit application packages for new projects and modifications to existing sites, which include engineering construction plans, calculations, surveys, geo-technical reports, and legal documentation.
  • Collects and processes engineering related data.
  • Prepares technical review comments and requests additional information from engineers and property owners for revisions to calculations and plans; prepares technical reports with project specific information, license conditions, engineering data, and calculation summaries.
  • Performs site inspections for construction compliance and identify deficiencies in inspection reports.
  • Communicates with developers, attorneys, engineers, banks, and the general public for the purpose of reviewing construction plans and specifications and the issuance of permits; performs research to respond to queries and complaints.
  • Review plans for compliance with County and Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) standards and specifications.
  • Performs related work as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil/Transportation engineering field.
  • A valid Florida Class "E" Driver's license is required for duration of hire.

Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following:

  • Master's degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Public Administration or closely related field.
  • State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • State of Florida Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Public Manager (CPM) Certification
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) 
  • Work Zone Traffic Control Training Certification
  • 2+ years of experience with review of utility construction plans or related engineering plans.
  • 2+ years of governmental/public sector or public works engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in construction or management of utility projects.
