Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for two full-time interns in the Structural Reform and Governance department. The department incorporates four teams—Democracy Policy, Courts and Legal Policy, Technology Policy, and Religion and Faith—and is dedicated to taking swift action to strengthen the legal, institutional, digital, and informational guardrails of democracy and to do so in a way that equips it to serve as a force for good.
  • The Democracy Policy team is committed to developing structural reform policies and advancing an agenda that strengthens U.S. democracy, ensures everyone has an equal voice in the democratic process, and centers equity to empower communities of color and other historically underrepresented communities.
  • The Courts and Legal Policy team works to advance critical reforms to the judicial and legal system that will increase professional and demographic diversity at the highest levels of the legal profession, protect civil rights, and broaden access to justice.
  • The Technology Policy team is a multi-issue team of technologists focused on building a progressive technology policy platform and agenda that advances the public interest through an open, generative, rights-respecting internet and effective democratic regulatory infrastructure.
  • The Religion and Faith team is advancing a progressive vision of religious liberty and partnering with faith communities in support of all of American Progress’ crosscutting priorities.

The interns will support the department’s mission and work while learning many of the skills it takes to become a policy professional at a progressive nonprofit. The department is ideally seeking a law student/graduate/professional student and an advanced undergraduate (junior or senior) to aid in its work.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and analysis on emerging policy issues, including research on laws and policies affecting the team’s portfolio as outlined above.
  • Draft memos, fact sheets, issue briefs, and talking points that compile and analyze data, original research, and analysis.
  • Track policy and media developments and interact with policy experts internally and externally.
  • Research and maintain records of press coverage and other important metrics for the department’s work as well as assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, meetings, and conferences as well as note taking.
  • Assist the department across a variety of projects that involve coalition building and advocacy work.
  • Work with policymakers, legal experts, and allied organizations to further the department’s work.
  • Attend virtual meetings, webinars, seminars, hearings, and lectures and report back takeaways. Interns are also encouraged to attend the many events at American Progress as well as events that take place on Capitol Hill and throughout Washington, D.C.
  • Whenever possible, write about the department’s policy priorities, either as a contributor to a larger piece or as the individual author of a column for publication.

Requirements and qualifications:
  • Currently in pursuit of associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, or law degree, or recent graduate.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and experience.
  • Interest in and general understanding of issues across the department’s portfolio. Experience in one or multiple areas of departmental work is preferred, but depth in every departmental policy priority is not expected.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

American Progress interns are paid at the D.C. minimum wage rate of $16.10 per hour. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Interns will receive paid time off for federal holidays. Interns are expected to be available to work from and commute to American Progress’ Washington, D.C., office at least two days per week. This position is not represented by a union.

We will continue to monitor COVID-19 and the levels of community spread and adjust plans as needed for in-office work. Any changes to our current hybrid office work policy will be communicated at the time of hire. Updates will be posted on American Progress’ Jobs page.
