Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States—in addition to the racial justice movements and economic downturns—the Sorenson Impact Center’s Model Analyze Prototype Share (MAPS) MAPS project had conversations with dozens of students about the changes in their higher education experiences, particularly those that showed new or exacerbated inequities in the system.
Again and again, the team heard that students didn’t feel understood by their institutions or involved enough in decision-making spaces. Sorenson Impact created the first Student Coalition on Higher Education in response to this common experience of students, bringing together a group of postsecondary students from across the nation. Throughout its first year and second year, the Student Coalition met with industry professionals, led conversations with fellow students, conducted research, and more, all with the aim of driving student-equity-centricity in the future of higher education.
The Sorenson Impact Center is looking for student interns to work in the Student Coalition in the Model Analyze Prototype Share (MAPS) Project, as it continues into its third year the group will build upon the key work already begun, focusing on centering and empowering students in the story of higher education by understanding student experiences, amplifying student voices, and leveraging student expertise.
Working alongside MAPS research-to-practice and strategic communications teams, three (3) Student Interns with the Student Coalition will play a key role in:
- ● engaging with administrators and fellow students by planning and executing targeted conversations, convenings, and more
- ● critically analyzing external engagement, current events, and more to develop student-equity-centric insight
- ● translating quantitative and qualitative findings into practical information and field thought leadership for higher education decision-makers
- ● strategically disseminating knowledge to higher education leaders seeking to drive change
- ● writing strategic communication content to provide the higher ed industry with a student voice(s)
- ● Current enrollment in a postsecondary program within the U.S.
- ● Dedication to equitable student success
- ● Strong attention to detail
- ● Able to juggle multiple projects at a time
- ● Strong communication skills, including verbal and written
- ● Excellent time management and organizational skills
- ● Desire to build and cultivate strong relationships
- ● Reliable and consistent participation and contribution
- PREFERRED SKILLS
- Students that have the following background or skills may receive deeper consideration, but these are not required skills or qualifications.
- ● Knowledge of social media and communication materials such as (press releases, newsletters, reports, and white papers)
- ● Background in writing public facing reports, op-eds, and other thought provoking communication content
- ● Background in research and landscape analysis that has led to product development or enhancement
- ● Familiarity with with data practices and terminology and the ability to create verbal or written content to the general public
*The dynamic nature of work means the student experience becomes more valuable with deeper levels of engagement. To facilitate this experience, students are expected to commit to working 15-20 hours per week for a minimum of two semesters (continuation beyond the first semester is dependent upon meeting the appropriate level of performance).
