ENGINEERING INTERN, PT

NATURE OF WORK:
This is entry level engineering work in the office or field.
 
Work involves the application of elementary engineering principles and techniques while participating in field surveys and inspections, performing entry level computer aided drafting (CAD), and geographic information system (GIS) duties. Tasks must be performed with skill and accuracy. Specific instructions are received when duties are initially assumed, or new tasks are undertaken.
 
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Conducting traverse surveys and field measurements 
  • Collecting asset management data for right of way infrastructure construction and maintenance
  • Making design calculations and preparing specifications for portions of projects for roads, stormwater, and other engineering facilities
  • Preparing maps and drawings
  • Assisting with construction inspections for adherence to approved plans and specifications
  • Entering and managing data in Asset Management Software
 
Candidates are expected to:
  • Demonstrate an ability to compile, manage, and report on multifaceted data. 
  • Knowledge of basic civil engineering concepts and standard practices a plus.
  • Demonstrate an ability to read maps and navigate via map and compass; GIS/GPS experience a plus.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate an ability to multi-task, prioritize, and take directions.
  • Be willing to perform field work, as needed.
  • Utilize a CAD workstation to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Become familiar with various City standards and codes.
  • Utilize technical manuals and directives to ensure compliance with codes and City policies.
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A recent graduate or student actively pursuing a degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
 
Recent shall mean that candidates must not have graduated more than one year prior to the date of application. A copy of cumulative transcripts reflecting the most recent term of study will be required to be submitted. 
 
A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources.
