The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is creating a future that uses the latest technological advances in genome sequencing to help diagnose and treat kids with cancer and other rare genetic diseases. This role is creative, analytical, and collaborative. The Senior UX Engineer is a passionate problem solver, an excellent verbal and visual communicator, and exceptionally skilled in interaction design and development with extensive experience with responsive UX. This role requires the ability to combine strong design aesthetics with technical expertise. The Senior UX Engineer must be able to develop compelling, intuitive, and thoughtful user centric digital experiences in genomic variant interpretation. This individual is responsible for researching and implementing current design trends and usability best practices across multiple platforms, interfaces, and devices. This individual must also be adept at organizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously while working with an interdisciplinary team of content strategists, designers, developers, and stakeholders. It is expected that the individual in this position will possess strong software design and development abilities, enjoys solving complex problems and has a desire to make an impact in medical research and patient care. The successful candidate will drive development of novel and performant web tools for the analysis and interpretation of genomic variation data. The individual will also participate in related discussions, group meetings and progress reports for stakeholders at IGM.

  • Collaborate effectively with research and clinical faculty and staff
  • Discover and articulate UX problems and opportunities
  • Develop functional HTML, CSS and JavaScript applications
  • Make recommendations regarding information architecture 
  • Assist with website metrics and analysis
  • Execute usability testing and validation 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Education:
  • Relevant Digital, UX/UI, Information Systems, Informatics, or Engineering degree
Experience: 
  • At least 5 years of experience in a professional UI/UX design role with a focus on web application development.
  • Strong working knowledge of UI / UX design with a focus on web application development
  • Strong working knowledge of prototyping tools such as Omnigraffle
  • Applied working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite CC
  • Experience with interaction design and creative development
  • Up to date knowledge of user-centered design and best practice
  • Strong team and project management skills
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JS
  • Expert knowledge of web components
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with changing priorities
  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment 
  • Must have a high attention to detail, strong communication and interpersonal skills Desirable, Not Required
  • Interest in molecular biology and genetics, and willingness to learn concepts and terminology from these fields as needed. On the job training in these concepts will be provided as needed.
  • Familiarity with semantic web technologies a plus (e.g. JSON-LD, rdf)
