Aquatic Invasive Species Internship


Burnett County’s Land Services Department is seeking two Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Interns for the 2021 field season. The AIS Interns will be based out of the Burnett County Government Center in Siren, Wisconsin. The AIS Interns will report to the Burnett County AIS Coordinator, who will oversee duties of the AIS Interns. All necessary training for the position will be provided.
These individuals will assist with AIS prevention through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters (CBCW) program and its associated campaigns, educational events such as AIS Snapshot Day, and present at lake association meetings. AIS control will be completed through purple loosestrife biocontrol, use a variety of early detection monitoring methods, and by comprehensive mapping of AIS throughout Burnett County. Aquatic plant point intercept surveys will also be an important part of these positions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct watercraft inspections through the CBCW program, and promote adherence to the Burnett County decontamination ordinance.
  • Participate in statewide AIS prevention activities including the Landing Blitz, Drain Campaign, Bait Dealer Initiative, Waterfowl Campaign, and AIS Snapshot Day.
  • Assist County, State, Tribal, and Local stakeholders in the purple loosestrife biocontrol program.
  • Assist the Burnett County AIS Coordinator at workshops, trainings, and events.
  • Assist the Burnett County AIS Coordinator with AIS monitoring and AIS control efforts.
  • Assist during aquatic plant point intercept surveys on Burnett County Lakes.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Physical demands of this position vary from day to day and are highly dependent on the particular task at hand.
  • Normal working conditions involve regular exposure to the operating of equipment or adverse weather conditions such as wind, sun, and high and low temperatures.
  • Protective gear and clothing such as hard hats, boots and gloves may be necessary.
  • The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion related to rough terrain, carrying equipment, climbing steep banks, wading in shifting lake/stream beds, gathering of vegetation for sampling, bending and twisting to inspect boats and trailers.
  • Minor exposure to herbicides while treating AIS.

Qualifications

At least 1 year of study towards a B.S. degree in water related sciences, conservation, botany, biology or environmental education is preferred.

Miscellaneous Information

The approximate start date is May 1st, 2021 and the approximate end date is September 10th, 2021 (start and end dates are flexible). The AIS Internship positions are funded for 37.5 to 40 hours per week.
