Exercise Science/Kinesiology
Come to Point O’Pines Camp for Girls, a resort-style camp located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. We have over 150 staff positions and several internship opportunities and seek to fill them with students from many different majors and backgrounds. Under the general supervision of Program Area Directors, Area Heads, and Camp Directors, interns will have the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired in the classroom to a real world, fast-paced work environment.
Internships will be completed from mid-June to mid-August (This can be extended for interns in need of more hours). All interns at Point O’Pines Camp will receive mid-summer and final evaluations from his or her direct supervisor and a Camp Director. In most cases, interns will have responsibilities during the daily activity periods and will live in bunk with campers. All internships are paid positions! In addition, interns will be provided with round trip airline ticket, all meals, lodging and laundry service!!
Interns will fall into one of two categories: Specialty Counselors or Specialty Heads.
Specialty Counselor - A Specialty Counselor lives with campers in any one of our age groups. During the daily activity periods, she/he instructs in one of our specialty areas, such as Aquatics, Team Sports, Individual Sports, Visual Arts, Theater Arts or Fine Arts. Specialty Counselors should be experienced in the areas in which they would like to instruct.
Specialty Head - A Specialty Head is an individual who directs a specific specialty area, such as, Aquatics, Team Sports, Individual Sports, Visual Arts, Theater Arts or Fine Arts. This individual is responsible for the development and execution of a specific activity program. The ideal candidate would have extensive knowledge and experience in a specific activity area. Specialty heads must be willing to instruct girls of ages 7-15 and have the ability to direct and advise college-age instructors. Specialty Heads work closely with the Camp Directors to ensure quality programming for all of our campers.
Fitness
(Qualifying majors: Kinesiology, Exercise Science or related field)
Learning Opportunities
- Apply the knowledge you learned in the classroom to the real world with real clients. Train youth in a variety of fitness areas, including resistance training, classes (aerobics, boxing, yoga, zumba, etc), and long distance running.
- Assist with program planning and curriculum development.
- Gain experience teaching ages 7-15 at varying ability levels.
- Receive American Red Cross First Aid, CPR/AED certification.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and care for the safe use of all fitness equipment.
- Keep records and make reports concerning campers progress during the summer.
- Promote a variety of fitness activities that utilizes all of the fitness facilities.
- Assess the fitness capabilities of campers using the fitness facilities and provide a level of instruction appropriate to camper’s abilities and experience.
Requirements
- Must have experience working in a fitness setting.
- Personal training certificate a plus, but not required.
- Must have experience working with children.
