Civil Engineer, Senior-Level

Have a passion for roadway design? We’re looking for a licensed engineer ready to move their career ahead.
Job description
If you’re a licensed Professional Engineer with at least eight years of experience and looking to advance your career, then OBEC is a good fit for you. Join our team in Lake Oswego, Medford, Salem or Eugene to take on a key role on large teams for some of our region’s most complex transportation projects.
Summary
As licensed Professional Engineer with at least eight years of experience, you’ll apply your expert understanding of roadway design fundamentals to help project teams solve unique technical problems and perform their best. You’ll be a key team resource regarding physics, drainage route planning and layout, alignment geometry, earthwork volumes, and alternatives analysis. If you have a Master’s degree in civil or structural engineering, you can move into this position with seven years of experience.
Technical Skills
Your expert working knowledge of the AASHTO policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets needs to be paired with a high aptitude for working effectively with others. Every problem is unique, and you need to be able to recognize and incorporate the break-through constructive criticism or guidance can come from anyone on the team. Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD or Microstation is required, allowing you to independently and accurately complete engineering calculations. You should also have basic proficiency using a second roadway design software like Civil 3D, InRoads, and GeoPak. Your technical abilities must be rounded out by excellent communication, organization, and time management skills as well as an advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs (Outlook, Word, Excel). A working knowledge of the consulting engineering business is required to effectively coordinate project resourcing (staffing) with the division manager and other project managers as well as to generate work as a result of industry recognized expertise and reputation.
Teamwork and Assignments
We will push you to hone not only your engineering skills, but also your ability to perform as part of a dynamic team that works with several clients on simultaneous projects. Reporting directly to a more senior engineer and working alongside other engineers, you will mentor and oversee the work of less experienced design team members. You will perform design and engineering tasks with little or no guidance, so you must exercise strong engineering judgment with broad guidance from senior staff. You’ll also quickly learn and apply technical mathematical concepts and engineering design skills – including OBEC standards and best practices – helping others learn them as well.
When you get to work each day, you’ll take on tasks related to roadway design, 3-dimensional modeling, quantity calculations, and alternatives analysis for highly complex transportation projects. As a team expert, you will also perform independent design checks and other engineering-related and mentorship-related tasks. You will serve as engineer-of-record on medium-sized design projects. You will independently write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences. Your understanding of design codes as well as drafting and negotiating successful project scopes, budgets, and schedules will help you effectively collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams as well as with clients, contractors, suppliers, and teaming partners.
Advancing Your Career
At OBEC, mentoring is a two-way street. You can rely on senior team members to be proactive mentors in helping you with your career goals and advising you on the work you do – giving you achievable assignments that push you to excel. Senior team members will rely on you to do impeccable, timely, and detailed work and to help think of ways to do things differently. Your flexibility to take on a range of assignments will mean that you’ll be comfortable with not only design and CAD software but also the range of critical project administration duties that includes attending meetings, writing correspondence, and compiling specifications and reports.
It takes a team to move a project from concept to final plans, specifications, and engineering estimates. In this role, you’ll take on increasingly complex parts of that process as you build the skills and experience you need to advance your career.
