Bridge/Structures Designer, Entry-Level

 

This position is located in either our Lake Oswego or Salem offices.

 

Summary

The Structural Design Tech 2 is responsible for performing engineering tasks related to structural design and analysis under the supervision of a licensed Civil Engineer. The person in this position is expected to exercise strong critical thinking skills, and demonstrate strong structural engineering fundamentals. The successful person is expected to show a working knowledge of the International Building Code and be able to quickly learn and apply other design codes as needed.  A person working in this position is also expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism and seek guidance from more experienced members of the team as necessary. This position requires a willingness to learn skills and perform a variety of tasks not directly related to the field of structural engineering, including, but not limited to: construction support assignments, in-service inspections, bridge, roadway and over civil engineering tasks. 

 

Please note: Although this position is a design technician position, we anticipate that the successful candidate for this position will start out working in the field for around 1 year in our Inspection Group.  This work will consist of performing specialized technical and field services including field engineering, construction inspection, and other project related functions in both the field and office according to company established methods. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

We will screen candidates based on the minimum requirements for this position and will also look for candidates who have previous experience with:

·        Performing specialized field engineering services; read and interpret complex and intricate plans and specifications for public works projects

·        Consulting with PM or Assistant PM and other professional staff regarding construction inspection and field engineering project tasks, schedules, and requirements

·        Adhering to QA/QC protocols and practice health and safety awareness and self-protection at all times

·        Perform structural engineering related calculations, analysis, and design tasks under the supervision of a licensed engineer.

·        Write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences under the supervision of a licensed engineer.

·        Learn and apply OBEC standards and best practices

·        Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams

·        Perform independent checking of the design work of other team members

·        Work efficiently to complete tasks within an assigned amount of time

·        Develop an understanding of project budgets and schedules

·        Proficiently employ a variety of design codes related to the industry.

·        Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

Education:

 

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, structural) from an accredited university and at least one year of experience.  A Master's degree focused in civil or structural engineering is preferred and shall substitute for one years' worth of experience. 

 

Certifications:

Engineer in Training certification required with progress towards obtaining professional (civil/structural) registration required.

 

Previous experience/skills:

Required

·        Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel)

·        Basic level CAD proficiency using AutoCAD and/or Microstation

·        Strong structural engineering fundamentals including: physics, statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, steel and concrete design.

·        Ability to accurately complete engineering calculations by hand

·        Ability to accurately complete the design of structural details with supervision

·        Exceptional technical and communication skills

·        Strong organization skills

·        Intermediate level proficiency with one or more of the following structural analysis programs: SAP2000, Risa3D, Midas, or GT Strudl.

·        Basic level proficiency with MathCAD

·        Basic knowledge of the International Building Code and referenced design codes

·        Understanding of seismic design principals and analysis methods

Preferred

·        Intermediate level proficiency with MathCAD

·        Intermediate knowledge of IBC and/or AASHTO LRFD Design Specifications

·        Seismic design experience including non-linear analysis
