Safety Communications Intern - Cherne

Cherne Contracting, a subsidiary of Kiewit, is a union only, heavy industrial contractor, whose heritage is that of a mechanical contractor. As a full service general contractor, we typically self-perform 90% or more of the work, using direct hire union craft. Our experience includes mining, paper, and a variety of other industrial construction projects, but in recent years our focus has been mainly in the petrochemical and power industries with project sizes ranging from $5 million to well over $200 million in construction value. We have successfully completed hundreds of construction projects across the United States.

We are searching for a talented candidate to join its team as part of a three-month summer internship. The intern will serve as a valued member of the Safety Team, providing ongoing support for a wide array of external, internal and creative communication projects and programs that are helping increase safety communication for the project. Kiewit demands a person with high attention to detail and time management skills to consistently meet deadlines. This internship opportunity is based in Richmond, CA.

Essential functions

  • Provide support for public relations and government affairs.
  • Assist in media monitoring and measurement.
  • Support the ongoing management of the company’s external and internal social media presence.
  • Help research, write, edit and proofread key company content, including news and information shared through Kiewit print and online media, video and other relevant internal and external communication vehicles.
  • Verify facts, dates and statistics to support various communication initiatives.
  • Assist with safety leadership and other special communication projects as assigned.
  • Provide administrative support to keep the team operating effectively, including archive management and online document clean-up.

Qualifications

We are seeking a university student pursuing a degree in Journalism, Mass Communication or a related field of study. The following are basic qualifications for the role:

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous internship experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of today’s social media landscape.
  • Experience in public and media relations.
  • Experience in government affairs helpful.
  • Strong understanding and application of AP style guidelines.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy; strong organizational skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; including PowerPoint and Excel.
  • High level of motivation, willingness to learn – a go-getter willing to go the extra mile.
  • Willing to work a minimum of 40 hours a week.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite graphic design software preferred.
  • Knowledge and skill with peripheral technology, such as digital cameras, scanners and A/V equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
