INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER INTERN – HP DESIGN / HP INC. – HOUSTON Start Date: 2nd week of May 2018. Projected End Date : 3rd week of August 2018, or 2nd week of December 2018 / extendable.

DESCRIPTION: The award-winning HP Design Team (Consumer Products) has one Summer Internship opening at our studio in Houston, TX. We are searching for a passionate individual with great creative skills, talent and imagination, who will work closely with, and report directly to, the Industrial Design Manager of Innovation, Advanced Concepts & Strategy. This team's main goal and responsibility is to help HP Inc. define the exciting future of personal computing.

NOTE: this is an Industrial Design position. It is not a UX / Researcher / Strategist position.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • build understanding of HP’s portfolio, the structure of our business, our markets
  • identify and track global macro trends and emerging technologies, understand how they influence the evolution of our products, experiences, and our business
  • identify users, their needs and pain points, and use them to define new opportunities for HP
  • create advanced concepts and ideas; new ways to do things; new products and new form factors; new experiences that don’t exist yet
  • safe-guard patent-able inventions by documenting them visually, and through well written supporting narratives; submit disclosures on behalf of HP Inc.
  • be a great storyteller: tell exciting stories that inspire
  • trace new paths towards innovation & design excellence within HP Inc

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good balance of aesthetic sensitivity and mechanical aptitude, good understanding of design principles and theories, Design Thinking
  • Keen eye for detail, good sense of balance, good visual taste
  • Great sketching and visualization skills (both analogue, on paper, and digital, on screen using Wacom tablet or equivalent)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (mastery of the English language preferred), good presentation skills
  • Ability to analyze / research / identify / sort / document / keep organized / quickly solve problems
  • Good proficiency in MS Office Suite, especially for presentation, email and calendar / time management (MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook)
  • Fluent in 2D drawing and photoreal rendering software (Illustrator, and Photoshop)
  • Great 3D CAD sculpting and surfacing skills (Solid Works or Rhino preferred; Pro-E also acceptable). The produced 3D CAD is often used to build high quality appearance models, therefore it will have to be well executed
  • Great 3D photoreal rendering skills (Keyshot preferred) with ability to correctly assign and control colors, materials and textures, lighting and environments, using the appropriate perspective- depending on the product’s size, scale and other factors
  • Ability to create storyboards, visualizing human-centric stories and illustrating the high-level product ideas in a simple yet captivating way.
  • Ability to create and edit short dynamic product animations / videos is also preferred (Premiere and/or After Effects preferred)
  • Open mind / thirst to learn / passion to explore new things - this is of crucial importance
  • Team eam player attitude, self-motivation, professionalism, patience, good inter-personal skills.
  • Openness to receive constructive feedback, accept design critique, undergo mentoring by the HP ID management team, and to being challenged to go above and beyond

KEY PREREQUISITES:

(1) This role is available to Industrial Design Students who already completed their 5th semesters in an accredited 4-year Industrial Design program, provided they did not yet commence their final (8th) undergraduate semester.

(2)To satisfy DOL rules, candidates must have a valid USA labor authorization
