Fall Internship, Rocky Mountain National Park- West Side Interpretation Intern

As a fall intern on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, you will gain experience presenting thematic interpretive programs, operating a visitor center, providing informal interpretation while hiking park trails, and presenting curriculum-driven EE programming in classrooms and on-site in the park. You will also increase your knowledge of natural and cultural resources and park management.

 Area Information: Rocky Mountain National Park is located 70 miles northwest of Denver and consists of 415 sq. miles of high mountain scenery sculpted by glaciers. Elevations range from 8,000-14,000 feet. Wildlife includes elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes, mountain lions, moose, pika, black bears, and a variety of birds. Trail Ridge Road provides access to the alpine tundra while connecting the east and west sides of park. There are over 355 miles of trails in the park. Qualifications: Rocky Mountain National Park seeks college students or recent graduates of exceptional ability with a background in natural science, history, communication, education, recreation and resource management or related fields. Candidates should have excellent communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to present formal presentations or tours. Flexibility, reliability, and willingness to learn are also desired along with a driver’s License and US. Citizenship.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include: presenting curriculum-driven EE programs in classrooms and on-site in the park, working with children, researching, preparing and presenting interpretive natural and cultural history programs to a variety of diverse audiences, answering questions at park visitor centers and communicating current park issues in a professional manner to the public. Additional duties include working as a team with park volunteer, seasonal, and permanent staff. Must possess a valid driver’s license, be a U.S. citizen and have the ability to work on uneven terrain at about 8,500'.

Dates of Service and Benefits: August 26- November 17. Commitment is forty hours/week, including weekends and holidays. Stipend of $240/week plus housing.
