As a Microbiologist, you will:

• Provide expert scientific leadership and guidance in microbiology and biological select agents and toxins (BSAT).
• Lead and oversee complex studies, method development, and laboratory preparedness activities.
• Analyze scientific data to resolve complex public health and laboratory issues.
• Coordinate scientific collaborations and represent the agency with federal, state, and external partners.
• Develop strategies to meet short and long-range goals for the applicable program and assure that strategies reflect most promising directions in research, preventive, and clinical approaches as it relates to the scientific area, including research with Select Agents.

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Qualifications:

Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:
 

• Demonstrating scientific communication skills, including writing and explaining detailed study plans, validation data, and complex technical laboratory procedures to diverse audiences.
• Serving as a laboratory subject matter expert in review of funding and grant applications, providing technical assessment of methods, validation approaches, and resource needs.
• Understanding of public health laboratory networks for preparedness and response, including their structure, operations, and interagency coordination.
• Administering or overseeing quality assurance/quality management programs for diagnostic testing, including proficiency testing, corrective actions, and documentation.
